What's New For 2018?
The only notable change on the 2018 Toyota Prius c is that alloy wheels now come standard across the entire line-up. Otherwise, virtually everything carries over from the outgoing model year.
The 2018 Toyota Prius c is only available as a subcompact hybrid variant. It is the smallest of the Prius body styles and has more of the typical hatchback shape to it.
There are four different trim levels available for the Prius c this year, each of which comes standard with Safety Sense, which is Toyota's driver aid bundle. The base trim is known as the One, and it is surprisingly well-equipped for a base. It features a 6.1-inch LCD touchscreen display, keyless entry, and power-adjustable mirrors. Moving up a notch, the Two has everything found on the One but adds unique two-toned upholstery, an upgraded sound system, and cruise control. The Three trim features push-button start, a built-in navigation system, and satellite radio. Also, the Three gets the Entune app suite as a standard feature, while a sunroof becomes an available option. Finally, the line-topping Four trim features the sunroof and all of the Three's standard equipment while adding chic simulated leather upholstery and heating to the mirrors. There is also the option of upgrading to 16-inch alloy wheels on the Four.
Driving is a mixed bag on the Prius c. It is hard to expect a powerful performance from a tiny vehicle built to conserve fuel. The standard 1.5-L inline-4 engine only generates 99 hp, so acceleration will typically feel sluggish, and you will have to work the pedal a bit to get up to highway speeds. The Prius c is perfectly capable of handling urban roadways, and its brakes feel pretty secure, and switching between mechanical and regenerative braking is relatively smooth compared to what you find on other hybrid models. With small wheels equipped on the three lower trim levels, the Prius c is able to easily navigate tight turns and winding roadways thanks to its impressive steering abilities. Handling feels fairly concise as well, although the low-rolling-resistance tires (which are designed to conserve fuel) do not provide a whole lot of grip on the road. Overall, the Prius c provides a relatively smooth ride with a CVT rounding out its powertrain. You just cannot expect to get a whole lot of sportiness out of a subcompact hybrid like the Prius c.
Fuel efficiency is where the 2018 Toyota Prius c really sells itself. The Prius c has an EPA rating of 46 combined mpg (48 mpg city/43 mpg highway), which is 4 mpg lower than the projected 50 mph that Toyota claimed when introducing the car in 2017. While there are a few hybrid models out there that best these numbers by surpassing the 50 mpg mark, the Prius c is probably the most affordable and well-equipped of these options.
The 2018 Toyota Prius c is lacking in driving performance, to be sure. However, the vehicle makes up for it with its fuel efficiency and plenty of standard features loaded onto the affordable base trim.
