With enough room for seven people, the new 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is perfect for any family. Even with all its cargo room, convenient interior features, and safety technology, the Atlas does not look like your typical family vehicle. It has a sleek and modern exterior that can suit anyone's style.
What's New for 2019?
The Atlas is still a relatively new addition to the Volkswagen family. The 2019 model year is only the second iteration of this mid-sized SUV. However, the new Atlas does have some welcome changes to suit the needs of drivers. One of the biggest changes is the standard safety equipment.
In the previous iteration, many high-tech safety features were reserved for higher trim levels and optional packages. Now, many are standard across the entire lineup. Every single Atlas now comes equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind-Spot Monitoring, Forward-Collision warning, and five other safety systems.
These active safety features can change the way drivers approach the road. They work continuously in the background to ensure that families can stay safe.
A couple of features have been moved across the lineup as well. The mid-range Atlas now comes with a three-zone automatic climate control system. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line build now includes a standard digital cockpit display, built-in navigation, and LED taillights.
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas has what it takes to conquer daily commutes and long road trips. It's available with two powerful engines under the hood. The first is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which is reserved for the base models. It can provide drivers with up to 235 horsepower and 258 pound-foot of torque.
This engine is fine-tuned with solid performance in mind. It feels powerful and responsive, letting drivers climb tough inclines and gain speed with ease. The second engine option is a 3.6-liter V6. This engine is available with all of the trim levels and is capable of producing upwards of 276 horsepower. It can also generate 266 pound-foot of torque.
The V6 engine is robust enough to handle tough jobs. The Atlas is available with some optional towing gear. When it's properly equipped and powered with the V6 engine, the Atlas can haul up to 5,000 pounds without hesitation.
Both of the engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission system. The wider gear ratio spread gives the engines the opportunity to perform at optimal levels. It can give drivers the power and acceleration they need at lower speeds. When the Atlas is moving at higher speeds, the transmission can find the sweet spot to improve efficiency.
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas has an EPA-estimated fuel rating of 20 MPG city and 26 MPG highway when its equipped with the 2.0-liter engine. With the V6, the Atlas can provide drivers with 17 MPG city and 24 MPG highway.
Dominate Any Terrain
Slick roads and uneven terrain are no match for the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas. This crossover is available with a versatile all-wheel drivetrain. Dubbed 4Motion, the four-wheel-drive models are only available with the V6 engine.
The unique thing about 4Motion is that it comes with an Active Control system. On the center dash, there's a rotary knob that lets drivers switch between different driving modes based on their surroundings. There are four different modes. They include snow, normal road conditions, and two off-road modes.
When a certain mode is selected, various performance settings are changed. Torque between the front and rear wheels is changed, steering is adjusted, and the throttle responsiveness is tweaked. All these changes work together to ensure that the Atlas has the best traction and stability possible.
Room for Everyone
At a glance, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas looks much bigger than it really is. The crossover belongs to the mid-size SUV class. However, it has plenty of room for the entire family. It has three rows of versatile seating, creating room for up to seven people.
The seating arrangements can be modified to fit a family's needs. For example, captain-style seats are available in lieu of a standard bench for the second row. These seats are adjustable and feature their own armrests for independent comfort. Between the two seats, there's a wide pass-through to access the third row.
Models with the rear bench seats offer plenty of flexibility as well. The second row has a 60/40 split design while the third row has a 50/50 split. Drivers can fold down different sides of the benches to make room for more cargo. When all the seats are down, the Atlas has an impressive 96.5 cubic feet of cargo room.
2019 Volkswagen Atlas Trim Options
Volkswagen offers a number of different trim levels for the Atlas. Each build has more features and packages that enhance the vehicle's performance. There are three basic trim classifications. These include the S, SE, and SEL. However, within those trims, Volkswagen is also offering a couple of distinct builds.
The base S models feature all of the new standard features, such as automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors. This configuration also includes Blind Spot Monitoring and Front Assist for an added layer of protection. Inside, there's a 6.5-inch touch screen infotainment with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The mid-range SE models have an upgraded infotainment center. It has an 8-inch touch screen display, a total of four USB charging ports, and two extra speakers in the cabin. These models are powered by the V6. The Atlas SE is also available with optional upgrades, such as a panoramic sunroof, trailer tow kit, and modified seating.
The premium SEL trim level has it all. In addition to the features of the previous builds, this configuration adds a number of high-tech equipment. These include a digital cockpit display, innovative media controls, and more.
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas offers many great features to families looking for a reliable vehicle. With its numerous safety features, high-tech equipment, and spacious interior, it's an SUV that can serve families well for many years to come. Check it out today!
Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:
- Example: Base Volkswagen Atlas invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
- What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.
Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)
Note: All Volkswagen Atlas MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.
A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
