Volkswagen Atlas Overview:

Before buying a new three-row crossover, car shoppers should test drive the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas. It boasts the key qualities that people look for in a family vehicle, including roomy seating and plenty of standard safety features. Meanwhile, excellent handling makes the Atlas a pleasing SUV to drive. Easy-to-use interior features also help the Atlas to measure up well against the competition. Keep reading to find out more facts about this SUV.

What’s New for 2021?

To help the Atlas to remain looking fresh, VW has updated its exterior styling. The SUV’s base engine can also now be paired with an all-wheel-drive system.

What Styles Does It Come In?

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is a large crossover that seats up to seven people. While front-wheel drive is standard, VW’s 4MOTION AWD system is available for an extra cost.

What Are the Available Trims?

The entry-level Atlas S is recommended for car shoppers who’re seeking value. This base model is loaded with a good amount of equipment. While the standard 6.5-inch touchscreen may be small, it does provide App-Connect for a quick smartphone connection. Some of the other key features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, remote keyless entry, three USB ports, and LED headlamps. Power comes from a turbo four-cylinder engine.

Moving up to the SE trim allows families to experience a bit more luxury. Upgraded amenities consist of three-zone automatic climate control, heated power front seats, and synthetic leather upholstery. There’s also more technology in the SE trim, including wireless smartphone charging and a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen. Upgraded alloy wheels enhance styling.

Unlike the lower trim levels, the Atlas SE with Technology offers a more powerful V6 engine as an option. Remote start and adaptive cruise control also help may this trim an appealing choice.

Featuring a digital gauge cluster and navigation, the SEL trim is more upscale. It also comes standard with a tow package. Second-row captain’s chairs are optional.

Folks who want to experience the utmost luxury should go for the range-topping Atlas SEL Premium. This leather-trimmed model provides ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. A 12-speaker Fender premium sound system and an automated parking system are also found on the Atlas SEL Premium.

The Atlas’ Exterior Styling

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas isn’t a flashy SUV, it does have an eye-catching appearance. A wider grille and new LED headlights arrive for 2021. Volkswagen also updated the crossover’s rear-end styling, which features new LED taillights. While there aren’t any big styling differences between the available trims, available 20-inch wheels do bring a more formidable stance. Buyers also have access to a sharp-looking R-Line package, which adds 21-inch black wheels and s special body kit.

Interior

VW’s standard 6.5-inch touchscreen is uncomplicated to use. However, the optional 8.0 touchscreen is better. Car reviewers also love Volkswagen’s available Digital Cockpit, which replaces the standard analog gauges with a customizable display screen. While the optional Fender premium audio system sounds good, it’s not offered as a stand-alone option.

Driving Experience

Rated to crank out 235 horsepower, the base turbo four-cylinder engine does not give up much performance. It noticeably boosts fuel economy. Nevertheless, some drivers will still want the optional V6 engine, which pushes out 276 horsepower. Aside from giving the Atlas a stronger feel, the V6 engine also bumps up the SUV’s maximum tow rating to 5,000 pounds. Both engines feed power through an eight-speed auto transmission.

The SUV’s commanding driving position gives drivers an excellent view of the street. Handling is also very impressive for a three-row family hauler. Although the Atlas isn’t as rugged as a truck-based SUV, owners will be able to take their family on a weekend adventure. VW’s optional 4MOTION AWD system brings Snow and Off-Road driving modes. Hill descent control is another adventurous feature available on the new Atlas.

Quality and Comfort

Buyers will love the comfort of the new 2021 Volkswagen Atlas. It’s a highly recommended family vehicle for tall drivers. If you need more than the crossover’s standard 20.6 inches of cargo space, the third row folds down to provide additional room. While interior quality is good, don’t expect the Atlas to match the luxuriousness of a Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Safety

While the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas hasn’t received a crash rating from the federal government, it does provide some beneficial safety technologies. The SUV’s standard forward collision braking system receives high marks for its ability to predict potential accidents. Blind-spot warning and pedestrian detection are also standard. VW’s available adaptive cruise control with low-speed traffic jam assist is great for traveling.

There are many reasons why the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas deserves a spot in your driveway. It’s a rewarding family vehicle that offers more than enough premium features. Don’t hesitate to take this three-row crossover for a test drive.

How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Volkswagen Atlas:

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base Volkswagen Atlas invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)

Note: All Volkswagen Atlas MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
