2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?
Acura has made several changes to the TLX for the 2021 model year. When the 2020 and 2021 TLX sedans are side by side, it's clear that the newest model has been built to look more athletic. It's longer and wider than its predecessor, and it has a lower stance. Acura has also enhanced the standard powertrain to make this car much more exciting to drive.
What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?
Four trims are available with the 2021 Acura TLX. The base model is called the Standard, and it's followed by the Technology Package. The next package available is the A-Spec Package, and it builds on what the Technology Package comes with. At the top of the lineup is the Advance Package.
On the Standard model, there is a lot to appreciate. This trim has special LED headlights that have a "jewel" look, a power moonroof, and heated side mirrors. Inside the cabin, there are heated front seats as well as a frameless rearview mirror that can automatically dim to reduce glare.
With the Technology package, the main upgrades are the customizable ambient LED lighting, blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, and navigation. For some people, the navigation system would be reason enough to get this trim.
The A-Spec Package has some nicer elements, such as LED fog lights, ventilated front seats, and dark chrome accents. It's a sportier version of the TLX, with stainless steel pedals and a decklid spoiler. It's the level at which wireless charging becomes standard.
The Advance is the most equipped. It treats people to a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. It has several exclusive components, like power-folding side mirrors, wipers that can turn themselves on when it rains, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display.
Which Trim is Right for Me?
Acura has made all of its TLX trims to be very attractive. This sedan feels athletic and upscale at the same time. There really isn't too much that the Standard is lacking, so it would be a great choice for anyone who wants to save some money.
That being said, those who are looking into getting Acura models may have some extra funds to spare. The Technology Package stands out with its navigation, and the Advance package has the best of what the company has to offer.
What Kind of Technology Does it Have?
Acura has put in a 10.2-inch screen into its TLX. This screen is a little different than what one might find in a competitor, as it's primarily controlled via a touchpad. This touchpad has a convenient position on the center console, and most people should figure out how to use it very quickly. People could also use buttons on the steering wheel and physical controls near the touchpad to control the system.
Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and Bluetooth are standard. Those who prefer staying connected to the network while away from the home or office will be happy to hear that the TLX can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Up to seven devices can connect to the hotspot at the same time. Wireless charging and a premium sound system are available. Every trim - with the exception of the Standard - has navigation, and the AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic program can keep people updated about which routes might be fastest.
How Does It Perform?
Under the hood of the 2021 TLX, there's a turbocharged engine. It uses four cylinders and has a displacement of two liters. Though it's not terribly large, it is quite powerful. It can generate 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is decent, as this car can earn up to 31 miles per gallon on the highway.
The TLX comes standard with front-wheel drive. Acura has chosen a sporty and responsive ten-speed automatic transmission to be matched with the turbocharged engine. The transmission is the type in which a driver can use paddle shifters if he/she prefers to have some more control over shifting.
All-wheel drive is an option with this model, and Acura calls its system "Super Handling All-Wheel Drive" or SH-AWD. Having SH-AWD can result in much better traction when the conditions are difficult, so it may be something for potential customers to consider getting.
Is It Safe and Reliable?
The TLX comes with AcuraWatch, which is the company's name for its suite of driver-assist systems. In the standard safety package, there is collision mitigation braking with pedestrian detection. There's also an adaptive cruise control program that allows the vehicle to adjust its speed if necessary, a lane keeping assist system in which steering can be gently corrected to keep the car centered, and a traffic sign recognition system that can remind people about speed limits and other important signs.
Higher trims have parking sensors to reduce the chances of getting involved in fender benders. In addition, they can help drivers "see" vehicles in their blind spots and those that may be crossing behind while the TLX is in reverse. The Advance Package is further enhanced with an all-around camera view.
What's the Interior Like?
As a premium vehicle, the Acura TLX feels sophisticated. The base model has leatherette upholstery, and all the others feature perforated Milano premium leather. Every model has heated front seats, and some are upgraded with ventilation in the front row. Other high-end features that are available with this car include a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a climate system that can learn people's preferences and make adjustments depending on how sunny it might be. Ambient LED lighting contributes to the elegant atmosphere in the cabin.
With a sporty, sleek frame, it's no surprise that the TLX isn't the biggest sedan in the market. Rear-seat leg room is just under 35 inches.
What are the Alternatives to this Model?
There are several cars that are similar to the 2021 Acura TLX. Some of them are the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Lexus IS.
