2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?
The 2021 Cadillac XT6 comes standard with wireless versions of both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, something that is new for this model year. A brand-new Luxury model joins the trim ladder at the bottom. It is powered by a 237-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is also used for the Cadillac XT5 model. This new engine is only found in the entry-level model and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?
There are now three different trim levels of the XT6 to consider. The new base Luxury model has a power liftgate, heated front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control. It has a variety of high-tech features for both safety and entertainment.
The Premium Luxury moves up from 18-inch wheels to 20-inch ones. It adds a hands-free function to the liftgate and gives the SUV power-folding side mirrors. Inside, a heated steering wheel and wireless charging pad headline the upgrades.
Residing at the top of the trim ladder is the Sport trim. This model shows off a more aggressive look, both inside and out. It also has an adaptive sport suspension and a specialized all-wheel-drive system.
Which Trim is Right for Me?
The low starting price of the new Luxury trim may be appealing. At the same time, it lacks the power of the other two options. It is also available with far fewer packages and options. Buyers who want more zip and choices should choose the Premium Luxury trim.
What Kind of Technology Does it Have?
Even the new Luxury model of the 2021 XT6 comes loaded with high-tech features. An onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless versions of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and six USB ports start off the list. It also comes with an 8-inch touchscreen and an eight-speaker sound system from Bose.
Both the Premium Luxury and Sport trims come with a wireless charging pad. Navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a 14-speaker audio system are all stand-alone upgrades offered on these two trims. There is also the Enhanced Visibility Package available, which includes a head-up display, digital gauge display cluster, digital rearview mirror, and an automated parking system.
How Does It Perform?
There are two engine options for the XT6 starting in 2021. The turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that is found exclusively in the base model creates 237-horsepower along with 258 lb-ft of torque. As for the Premium Luxury and Sport models, they continue to use a 3.6L V6. It generates 310-horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engine options.
For a vehicle of this size, the handling is pleasant. The base engine does a decent job when it comes to acceleration. On the other hand, those who often have a vehicle full of passengers or cargo will prefer the extra power that comes from the V6.
Is It Safe and Reliable?
This three-row SUV has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle received five stars overall. Many advanced driver aids, such as lane departure warning and forward-collision mitigation, are standard features. A long list of even more advanced driver aids is available as well.
The XT6 receives three out of five stars when it comes to predicted reliability from J.D. Power. While this is not a bad score, buyers can find many rivals that have better ones. The Cadillac XT6 does offer a slightly longer-than-average warranty, however, with four years of bumper-to-bumper coverage rather than three.
What's the Interior Like?
Depending on the model, there is room for either six or seven people to sit inside the 2021 XT6. With standard features like tri-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats, the cabin is comfortable. There are many available upgrades to be had on the top two models, including genuine leather upholstery and suede headliners.
It is hard to find a vehicle in this class with more cargo space than the XT6, but only when it comes to maximum capacity. With both the rear rows down, there are an impressive 78.7 cubic feet to work with. When all of the seats are up, however, there are only 12.6 cubic feet. This makes it a struggle to do any serious grocery shopping when the whole family comes along.
What are the Alternatives to this Model?
The Audi Q7 is another luxury midsize SUV worth serious consideration. Inside, the cabin feels more upscale and the ride is incredibly smooth. The technology features are not as user-friendly, however, so buyers will have to consider their priorities when choosing between the two.
Another option would be the Lincoln Aviator. With a powerful engine and pleasing appearance, this is an SUV that is growing in popularity. On the other hand, the headroom is a bit tight. Other luxury midsize SUV options include the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and Volvo XC90.
