The Sports Utility Vehicle class is one of the most competitive vehicle segments in the market. It grapples for the costumers' attention with the likes of Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, GMC, Volkswagen, and Honda, to name a few. Chevrolet's new 2021 Equinox compact SUV is another model from the carmaker for that specific market segment.
Here is an in-depth look at the new Equinox. Get acquainted with everything about Chevrolet's new 2021 Equinox Model: upgrades from its predecessor, the 2020 Equinox, trims available, performance, built-in technology, and alternatives.
2020 vs. 2021: What's the Difference?
Compared to its predecessor, the 2020 Equinox, Chevy hasn't made any substantial changes to this year's model. Whatever the case, the company has delivered some subtle changes to make it look like a new SUV. Some slight differences in the 2021 Equinox model include a new leather package on the LT trim level, which is discussed in depth below. One of the most notable changes that is anything but an advantage, is the lack of the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine available in its predecessor.
What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?
The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox is available in four trims. The base option is the L trim, which costs less than the other three LS, LT, and Premier trims. The L trim offers the necessary standard features among the three that many could consider table stakes for any SUV. Front-wheel drive is standard across the four trims. However, the L Equinox trim lacks the All-wheel-drive configuration available on the LS, LT, and Premier trims.
Equinox L Trim
The L trim sports a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, 7-inch diagonal infotainment touch screen, and keyless open and start. It also has 17-inch wheels, heated mirrors, a rear-seat reminder, a height-adjustable driver seat, and an audio system with six speakers.
Equinox LS Trim
It packs all the basics available in the standard L trim, plus some additional features. These include a power-adjustable driver's seat, a compact spare tire, and rear floor mats. This trim also has more options to choose from, for instance, exterior paint colors, and buyers can choose between a Front-Wheel Drive, and an All-Wheel-Drive configuration. Rear privacy glass is included in the optional LS Convenience package.
Equinox LT Trim
This trim provides additional features and is available in more packages: Confidence & Convenience, or the Leather and Infotainment packages.
Upgrades in the LT trim include upgraded headlights, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, power driver seat, tinted mirrors, and leather cushioning. Precisely, the infotainment package consists of an 8-inch touch screen display, navigation system, and a household-style 120v power outlet.
Equinox Premier Trim
The Equinox Premier trim includes the best buyers can get from the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox SUV. The leather cushioning, available selectively in other trims, is standard here. The infotainment screen is 8-inches, and the wheels measure 18-inches.
It also packs LED headlights, a hands-free power lift gate, and a wireless charging pad. Besides that, the Premier trim has several additional features included in the Confidence & Convenience II and Infotainment II packages.
Confidence & Convenience II adds a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, power-adjustable passenger seat, adaptive cruise control, ventilated front seats, and a Surround-view camera system.
The Infotainment II package includes all confidence and convenience II features plus navigation, a seven-speaker surround sound system made by audio-heavyweights, Bose.
Which Trim is Right for Me?
The 2021 Equinox is available in four trims, which can quickly get confusing. The base L trim is the right choice for buyers on a tight budget, but if one can stretch their budget slightly more, the LT trim is a solid choice.
The LT trim is the perfect sweet spot across the four Equinox trims. It includes leather upholstery, a larger 8-inch infotainment display, a navigation system, heated front seats, tinted windows, and SiriusXM radio.
What Kind of Technology Does it Have?
Straight off the bat, the 2021 Equinox has a 7-inch infotainment system. Chevrolet also offers an 8-inch option, but that is only available to buyers that can dig a little bit deeper into their pockets.
There's Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. A six-spear audio system is standard, but there's a seven-speaker surround-sound audio system powered by Bose on the Equinox Premier Infotainment II package.
How Does It Perform?
After scrapping the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine option in 2021, the Equinox is only available in a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It generates 170 hp and 203-pound feet of torque. With that, the 2021 Equinox delivers average acceleration performance. Handling is also unimpressive regardless of the trim.
Chevy also paid close attention to fuel efficiency with the Equinox sporting a 6-speed automatic transmission. The gear shifts seamlessly but shows reluctance when downshifting to save on fuel.
Is It Safe and Reliable?
Safety is equally essential when shopping for a car. Gladly, the 2021 Equinox has won hearts at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The car was awarded best ratings on all six crash tests by the IIHS while the NHTSA gave it an overall of five out of five ratings.
The Equinox also has several built-in safety features, like automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlamps, and lane-keeping assist. But is the 2021 Equinox reliable? Yes. The Equinox is ranked among the best compact crossover SUVs over its reliability ratings.
What's the Interior Like?
Chevy's 2021 Equinox interior design placed a heavy focus on the functionality and nothing more. It's simple and unexciting. Plus, the build quality is 50-50.
However, pricier trims have leather upholstery, which adds a layer of enthusiasm to the interior. The spacious interior should offer enough comfort to all passengers.
Aside from the aesthetics, it has ample cargo space. There are about 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Plus, the cargo space can stretch to over 60 cubic feet with rear seats folded. However, the cargo space is slightly less than what's available on some of the competitors.
What are the Alternatives to this Model?
The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox targets a highly competitive crossover market. Some alternatives to this model include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4, both available in hybrid options, unlike the Equinox. Subaru Forester is also a notable alternative and so is the GMC's Terrain.
