2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?
Ford is in the process of discontinuing most of their cars. They plan to focus on their popular trucks, SUVs and crossover vehicles going forward. The only remaining holdouts are Ford's Mustang sports coupe and the Ford Fusion, a four-door sedan. The Fusion will evolve into a crossover itself either halfway through 2021 or for 2022. In the meantime, there are no significant differences between the 2020 and 2021 Fusion sedans.
What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?
The 2021 Ford Fusion will be available in four different trim levels. The base model is called the S trim and comes equipped with a 2.5-liter engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. There's a basic AM/FM stereo with four speakers. The automaker's Sync 3 Infotainment System can be added on as an option. All trim levels get Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology with features like a Lane-Keeping System and Pre-Collision Assist.
The SE trim has either a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter engine. This model offers available all-wheel drive. It automatically gets the Sync 3 System and two more speakers for the audio setup. The SEL models get Automatic Temperature Control in two separate zones. The seats get upgraded to 10-way power-adjustable models.
The Fusion Titanium model comes loaded down with the best features that Ford has to offer. A premium audio system by Sony provides 12 speakers and HD radio. There is also a voice-activated navigation system to help drivers find every destination. Ambient lighting gives the interior a classy, upscale appearance.
Which Trim is Right for Me?
Most drivers will find the Titanium trim level to be the best choice. Each trim level only has a modest increase in price. The extra cost is worth the extra features and superior performance for the Titanium model. It has the most horsepower at 245 and excellent handling, especially with the all-wheel drive option. It also comes equipped with the best safety features, infotainment system and driver-assist technology.
What Kind of Technology Does it Have?
The 2021 Ford Fusion sedan will be packed with technology. There is technology for comfort and convenience. It is also equipped with useful driver-assist technology. The aforementioned Sync 3 Infotainment System offers hands-free calling, voice recognition and Bluetooth for streaming your favorite music.
All models of the Fusion come with Ford's Blind-Spot Information System, or BLISS for short. BLISS gives drivers more awareness of their surroundings. The Fusion has an advanced set of sensors to alert the driver when there's traffic in spots that may be hard to see. This system even keeps track of rear cross-traffic.
How Does It Perform?
The best performance available can be found in the SE and Titanium trim levels. These models are equipped with a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine. This engine produces an impressive 245 horsepower. Acceleration from a stop is very good with this engine. There's also plenty of passing power at highway speeds. The Fusion offers solid steering and handling with strong and smooth braking. Traction and handling are especially great in models with all-wheel drive.
Is It Safe and Reliable?
As previously mentioned, the 2021 Ford Fusion will come equipped with some handy driver-assist features. Every model gets a rear-view camera to help with driving in reverse. The Tire-Pressure Monitoring System keeps tabs on all four tires so that proper inflation can be maintained. Automatic Emergency Braking kicks in during emergencies and Electronic Stability Control keeps the vehicle stable.
When it comes to reliability, there aren't any statistics on the 2021 models as of yet. Since the Fusion is largely the same as it was in 2020, it's a safe bet that the reliability will be similar. The Fusion is known to be durable. The NHTSA rates the 2020 Fusion as "Good," in most categories. Ford has equipped the Fusion with an anti-theft system and a perimeter alarm to keep would-be thieves away.
What's the Interior Like?
The interior is well designed and filled with convenience features. The seats are comfortable at every position. The higher trim levels get a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support. The seats up front offer both heating and cooling. leather-trimmed sports seats are available as an option. The dual-zone climate-control keeps everyone comfortable no matter where they're sitting.
What are the Alternatives to this Model?
The four-door sedan is a shrinking segment of the automotive market. They're slowly being replaced with crossover vehicles and their larger SUV counterparts. Still, there is a need for the classic family sedan. Two of the biggest competitors for the 2021 Ford Fusion will be the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu and the 2021 Honda Accord.
The Chevy Malibu is one of the cheapest vehicles in this class. Unfortunately, it offers a lot less horsepower at every comparable trim level when put up against the Ford Fusion. The Chevrolet has better fuel economy. The Ford offers better handling and a more comfortable, upscale interior.
Honda's 2021 Accord may be the stiffest competition for the Ford Fusion in its last year on the market. The Accord has a long-running record as one of the best-selling vehicles in this class. It also has a reputation for good reliability. Both vehicles have a similar price point, but the Honda is more expensive. The Ford is a better bargain with plenty of standard features at a better price.
