Honda Passport Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

For 2021, Honda has made one significant change to the Passport SUV. The Honda Passport now has an eight-inch touchscreen as a standard component. This is a vast improvement over the five-inch touchscreen that was previously included on the Honda's base model. This will likely prove to be a very strategic move that will attract more attention to the Passport, making it more competitive in a crowded market.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

The four trims of the 2021 Passport are the Sport, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. They all run on the same engine, so performance doesn't have to be a consideration when choosing a trim.

In the Sport, there is an eight-inch touchscreen with smartphone compatibility, and this is going to be a major selling point. In addition, this trim has smart entry and other convenient amenities, along with LED Daytime Running Lights and a stylish exterior.

In the EX-L, the cabin is upgraded with leather seats and a power moonroof. These elements can really make a difference in the sophistication level. People up front can stay cozy with heated front seats, and the safety package is enhanced with blind spot monitoring.

The Touring and the Elite are the two higher trims. In the Touring, all-wheel drive is available, as it is in the lower trims. In contrast, the Elite comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Technology is upgraded in these two trims. For example, they both have a premium audio system and navigation. Parking sensors and a hands-free power tailgate can come in handy on a daily basis. In the Elite, the quality of some the features is greatly improved, as it has heated and ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a steering wheel with a heating element built into it.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

Since Honda decided to put in a large touchscreen on the base model, the Sport, there's not too much sacrificed by sticking with this trim. After all, it has the type of infotainment system that people are looking for, and it can come with all-wheel drive and a very capable engine. From a safety perspective, the only things it lacks are blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

If those two safety systems are important to a particular customer, then the other trims should be considered. Plus, these three trims all have leather upholstery heated front seats. If anyone wants additional luxury, there are some options. The Touring trim has heated front and rear seats, and the Elite trim has heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.

When looking at all the features that they offer as well as their costs, it's likely that the Elite will be too expensive for many customers. The EX-L is a very solid option, and the Touring would be reasonable if anyone prefers to have navigation and a few other advanced elements.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

Every new Passport has Bluetooth for streaming audio and making hands-free phone calls. This Honda SUV comes standard with an eight-inch high-resolution touchscreen. The size of this touchscreen makes it easy to interact with. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard.

Most of the trims have multiple USB charging ports so that people don't have to compete over who gets to charge their devices first. The Elite is the only trim that has wireless charging for convenience.

SiriusXM, HD Radio, and Wi-Fi capability are some of the other features built into certain trims of the Passport. The two top trims have navigation integrated into their infotainment systems. They have advanced voice recognition and a Honda HD Digital Traffic system, too, so people can quickly look up directions and get advice as to how they can avoid traffic congestion. In addition, the Touring and Elite have ten-speaker sound systems with subwoofers to enhance the overall audio quality.

How Does It Perform?

A 3.5-liter V6 engine powers the 2021 Passport. It does its job well, as it can generate 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This amount of capability makes the SUV feel fairly athletic. All-wheel drive can help in this regard, especially if the Passport is dealing with difficult conditions. The all-wheel drive system has different drive modes for snow, sand, and mud. If front-wheel drive is selected and someone has to handle a drive through snowy conditions, there is a snow mode that can optimize performance.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Honda has worked hard to design vehicles with driver-assist technologies. It's great that these are now standard in many models, including the Passport. Every Passport has various sensors and mitigation systems so that it can predict frontal collisions, sense when it's drifting out of position, or following vehicles too closely. If issues are detected, drivers will be alerted, and the SUV may be able to help correct the situation.

As mentioned previously, the top three trims are upgraded with blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. These can prove to be useful when a driver wants to switch lanes or back up and can't see in all directions.

What's the Interior Like?

The Passport has two rows of seats, and leg room is generous. In the front, there is 40.9 inches of leg room, and in the second row, there is 39.6 inches of leg room. Cargo capacity when the rear seats are in their proper positions is about 50 cubic feet. It can expand to about 100 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

Seats can be covered in cloth or leather. Heated and ventilated seats are available for the driver and front passenger, and the rear outboard passengers can also have heated seats.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

It seems like the list of SUVs in the market is continually growing. Some of the two-row models that have similar features to those in the 2021 Honda Passport are the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Toyota RAV4, and Chevy Blazer.
