Hyundai Palisade Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

The most notable change to the Palisade for the 2021 model year is the addition of the Calligraphy trim. This trim is the most sophisticated one that Hyundai makes, and it comes with more refined exterior elements, quilted-leather seats, and standard all-wheel drive.

A few other changes have been made to the optional packages. The SEL Premium package, for example, now has navigation and a larger touchscreen, and it has an in-vehicle intercom to help with communication in the cabin.

All of the Palisade trims now have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard components, along with HD radio and LED headlights that make the vehicle look more modern and are easier to see at night.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

The SE is the base model for the 2021 Hyundai Palisade. It comes with multiple driver-assist systems that can continually watch out for problems and help drivers avoid accidents. The cabin of the SE is outfitted with cloth seats, a manually adjustable driver's seat, and a second-row bench with seats that can be easily slid forward. In terms of technology, the SE will please a lot of people with its eight-inch touchscreen and smartphone compatibility.

In the SEL, the safety package is enhanced with blind spot monitoring. More technology is integrated into the cabin, in the form of a Proximity Key entry system, a dual-zone automatic climate system, and a rearview mirror that can automatically dim when bright headlights are detected. A big difference from the SE is that the SEL has captain's chairs in its middle row. However, the bench seat is still available. The SEL keeps people comfortable with heated front seats, and its driver's seat is power-adjustable.

Many upgrades are found in the Limited. For instance, it has premium Nappa leather seats, first- and second-row seats that have both heating and ventilation, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. That touchscreen has a navigation program integrated into it so that people can quickly look up directions and figure out how to avoid traffic.

The Calligraphy trim takes things one step further. Its headliner and steering wheel are more sophisticated than what the Limited has, and its the only trim to have puddle lights on its side mirrors. Its other advantages are found on the exterior of the vehicle. They include rear accent lighting, special skid plates, and a front grille with an exclusive design.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

The average Palisade customer will certainly appreciate all that the Calligraphy trim has to offer but might not feel that its upgrades are worth the extra cost. Similarly, the Limited might be too far out of someone's price range. However, the Limited would be great for someone who wants to treat himself/herself to a luxury vehicle.

The SEL is much more of a practical purchase. It has all the major components that people are looking for. Its driver-assist technologies are impressive, and it has many convenient amenities like heated front seats and a two-zone climate system. The SE can certainly get the job done as well, and with its more basic features, it will appeal to people on tighter budgets.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

The standard touchscreen on the 2021 Palisade measures eight inches. Along with this touchscreen, there is wireless smartphone connectivity. The five USB ports are sure to be appreciated when people are traveling with more than one device. On the Limited and Calligraphy trims, wireless charging is supported. These trims also have 360-degree camera views, heads-up displays, and two more USB ports in their third rows.

Two other notable upgrades are included with these two top trims. The first is that they have 10.25-inch touchscreens with navigation built into them. The other enhancement is in the form of a 630-watt Harman Kardon audio system.

How Does It Perform?

Every 2021 Hyundai Palisade uses the same type of engine. It's a 3.8-liter that comes with six cylinders, and its size allows it to generate a lot of power. The engine delivers 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, and it gives the SUV the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Hyundai has put an eight-speed automatic transmission into this model. The SE, SEL, and Limited are available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, while the Calligraphy is exclusively offered as an all-wheel-drive model.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

In a new Palisade, people can drive confidently. Giving people greater peace of mind are several different driver-assist systems. With forward collision-avoidance assist, it's much less likely that the Palisade will be involved in a frontal collision. This program can even detect the presence of pedestrians in the street.

In addition, this Hyundai can gently correct its steering so that it can stay centered in a lane. If smart cruise control is engaged, the vehicle can adjust its speed so it can stay a safe distance away from the vehicle in front of it. Other safety features can actively work to keep the vehicle out of harm's way when changing lanes or backing up.

What's the Interior Like?

Depending on whether the SUV has captain's chairs or a bench in its second row, the Palisade can accommodate seven or eight passengers. All of the rear seats can be lowered to expand cargo capacity to over 86 cubic feet. Making this task easier are power-folding seats in the back row. In the second row, a standard feature allows someone to simply touch one button to slide the seats forward.

Many trims have upgrades that make them feel like luxury vehicles. Those upgrades include Nappa leather seats, heating and cooling elements in their seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheels.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

The market is filled with three-row SUVs, so the 2021 Hyundai Palisade does have some solid competitors. Similar vehicles include the Kia Telluride, Chevy Traverse, Volvo XC90, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.
