Hyundai Tucson Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

Not too much has changed with the Hyundai Tucson as it was transitioned from the 2020 to the 2021 model year. One minor difference is that there are some new exterior paints to choose from. New to the list of paint colors are Ash Black, Red Crimson, and Coliseum Gray. They replace Sage Brown, Gemstone Red, and Ash Black.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

Six trims are offered, starting with the very affordable SE and ending with the upscale Ultimate trim. The cost of a new Tucson starts under $24,000 and goes all the way up to $32,000, so there's a pretty wide range of options.

The SE and Value run on 2.0-liter engines, while the others use larger 2.4-liter engines. Both lower trims use 17-inch wheels, have several driver-assist systems, and feature automatic headlights. On the Value, the side mirrors are enhanced with heating elements, and the safety package is more comprehensive since it includes blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring.

The SE and Value have cloth seats and seven-inch touchscreens. In the Value, there are heated front seats, the addition of SiriusXM, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. These changes might be minor, but they could be significant. Plus, the Value has a proximity key entry system.

At the next level, which is the SEL, the Tucson feels noticeably quicker because of its upgraded engine. The SEL rides on 18-inch wheels, and it has a few more high-tech components, such as a rear-seat USB outlet and dual-zone climate control.

When moving to the Sport trim, many more differences can be noticed. This trim is unique because of its 19-inch wheels. On its exterior, it has LED headlights and LED taillights in addition to a very convenient hands-free smart liftgate. People may appreciate that the Sport has wireless charging and a premium audio system.

The Limited and Ultimate have the most sophisticated elements. They both have 360-degree cameras and chrome exterior accents. Their side mirrors are heated, which can be a real benefit in the colder months. The cabins of the Limited and Ultimate feature leather seats and heated steering wheels. Representing the best of what Hyundai has to offer, the Ultimate has a larger touchscreen with navigation, heated rear seats, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

The Limited, which is priced under $30,000, can be a real treat to drive. It might not have everything that the Ultimate has, but it does come close. The Ultimate is best reserved for people with refined tastes and a need for navigation.

On the other hand, the SE has excellent value. It has so many of the advanced features that people are looking for these days, such as a touchscreen, smartphone compatibility, and driver-assist technology. It has a comfortable cabin and nice exterior, and of course, its price makes it very attractive. That being said, the mid-level trims each have their own advantages.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

Almost all of the Tucson trims have seven-inch touchscreens, with the top trim having an eight-inch touchscreen and integrated navigation. The standard touchscreen includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. Many mid-level trims also have SiriusXM to provide some extra choices for entertainment. On the higher trims, the premium audio system consists of an external amplifier and eight speakers, one of which is a subwoofer to really round out the sound.

How Does It Perform?

Two engines are available on this Hyundai model, both of which are inline four-cylinder versions. The standard engine has a displacement of 2.0 liters. It can generate 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. With a displacement of 2.4 liters, the larger engine comes with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity is 1,500 pounds with the smaller engine and 2,000 pounds with the larger engine.

Customers get to decide whether their new Tucsons have front-wheel or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive can do a great job of enhancing traction when the road conditions aren't that great.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Every 2021 Tucson has various sensors that watch out for potential problems. Forward collision-avoidance assist and lane keeping are two standard features. These systems can apply pressure to the brakes and correct steering, respectively, so that the vehicle can hopefully avoid an accident. Blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring are found on every trim except for the base model. Higher trims may also come with pedestrian detection and a surround view monitor to give drivers a better idea of what's around them

What's the Interior Like?

As a fairly spacious SUV, the Hyundai Tucson can comfortably fit five passengers and their cargo. Leg room is 41.5 inches in the front row and 38.2 inches in the second row. Behind the seats, there's a cargo area that has 31 cubic feet of space. Folding the rear seats down can expand cargo capacity to about 62 cubic feet, which is plenty of room for most situations.

The SUV can have cloth, YES Essentials cloth, or leather seats. Many trims keep the driver and front passenger nice and cozy with heated front seats. Ventilation in the front seats is available, as are heated rear seats. With various storage compartments and convenient amenities like remote entry and push button start, the Hyundai has a good amount of standard features.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

One close competitor to the Tucson is the Santa Fe, which is manufactured by the same company. Alternatives made by other brands include the Ford Escape, Subaru Crosstrek and Outback, Honda HR-V, and Jeep Compass.
