Kia Optima Overview:

The Kia Optima is a popular mid-size sedan that Kia Motors started to produce and sell more than 20 years ago. In that time, the company has continued to enhance the vehicle with each new generation. With the 2021 model year, the Kia Optima is being rebranded as the Kia K5 and will have a variety of features that consumers will continue to love.

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

While the Kia Optima has been around for a long time, the company does continue to try to improve it. The 2021 model year is much different than it was in the prior year. To start, the vehicle is now going to be branded as the Kia K5, which is a vehicle that has been used in other parts of the world for more than a decade. There are many changes to the K5 that makes it an upgrade compared to the 2020 Optima.

One of the main improvements to the vehicle is the new enhanced engine. The 2021 model year comes standard with a more powerful four-cylinder engine. It can also be upgraded to a very powerful turbocharged engine that can produce nearly 300 horsepower. The K5 also now offers all-wheel drive and a variety of interior and safety features that were not available in the prior model year.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

The 2021 Kia K5 has a variety of different trim levels to choose from. The base trim levels is the LX, which comes standard with front-wheel drive. The next trim up, the LXS will come standard with FWD, but can be upgraded to have AWD. The EX Auto trim offers all-wheel drive and more interior and tech features than the other trim levels. The highest trim available is the GT-Line, which can come with either FWD or AWD.

The main difference between the trim levels is the package of safety, tech and luxury features that you will receive. The base LX trim comes with only the standard features while the GT-Line is fully equipped. Further, the LX and LXS come with the standard engine while the higher trims will come with the more powerful engine option.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

The trim that is right for you will be based on what you are looking for in a vehicle. If engine performance and interior features are not very important to you, the LX or LXS trims could be ideal. However, if you are looking for a luxury features and a high-performance engine, you should consider upgrading to the GT-Line.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

The 2021 model offers a variety of impressive technology features. The standard features in the base trim level are impressive when compared to other vehicles in the same class. Some of the standard features include an 8-inch touch screen that can connect to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, a six-speaker audio system and two USB inputs.

When upgrading to the higher trim levels, you can get a very large 10.25-inch screen that is used for navigation and to control the infotainment system. You will also enjoy the impressive, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a wireless charging pad and more USB inputs. These features are very comparable to features received in luxury sedans.

How Does It Perform?

The 2021 Kia K5 has two primary engine options. The base engine option is a four-cylinder engine that will produce around 180 horsepower. This is a comparable engine to other vehicles in the same class. With this engine option, the Kia will come equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Those that are looking for more engine performance should consider upgrading to the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that can produce nearly 300 horsepower. With this engine, you will also receive an enhanced dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2021 model comes standard with front-wheel drive but all-wheel drive is available in most of the available trims.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Kia has continued to develop a reputation for producing safe and reliable vehicles. The 2021 Kia K5 continues this reputation. The 2021 model year will come standard with many different safety features including a rearview camera, a variety of different airbags and electronic stability control. The 2021 model also comes standard with many safety features that are only available as upgrades in other competing vehicles. Some of these advanced features include a rear-seat reminder, lane departure warning and lane keep assist. The higher technology and safety packages include even more safety features including blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

What's the Interior Like?

The 2021 K5 is continuing to receive good reviews and ratings when it comes to the interior. The base trim level for the 2021 K5 has a very comfortable interior. The cloth upholstery is comfortable and there is plenty of seating for five passengers. Those that want more interior features can upgrade to the higher trim levels and enjoy leather upholstery, leather heated and ventilated seats and a leather heated steering wheel. Compared to other midsize cars, the 16 cubic feet of cargo space is more than sufficient.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

The Kia K5 is all-new with the 2021 model year. Due to this, and the prior successes that the company had with the Optima, the 2021 K5 is bound to be popular with car buyers. For those that are in the market for a midsize sedan there are other options to consider as well. Some alternatives include the Toyota Camry, The Honda Accord and the Mazda M6. All of these midsize sedans will have new models released for the 2021 model year as well.
