Kia Sorento Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

For 2021, Kia completely transformed the Sorento. It went from something similar to a minivan to a rugged vehicle that definitely fits in the SUV department. The Sorento looks much more muscular than its counterpart did, and it seems to sit taller and have a more aggressive look. 2021 is the first year in which the Sorento is available as a hybrid.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

The S is the entry-level trim for the 2021 Sorento Hybrid. It looks quite modern with its black front grille, chrome around the windows, and a rear spoiler. Its side mirrors have LED turn signals built into them, and there are more LEDs in the Daytime Running Lights and headlights.

In this base model, there is plenty of technology to appreciate. All the components that people are looking for, like a touchscreen and smartphone compatibility, are part of the standard package. This trim has two reclining seats in the third row and captain's chairs in the middle row. Those seats can be quickly slid forward or folded down to create more room.

From a safety perspective, the EX has more comprehensive protection. It has distance sensors in both the front and back to help with parking, and its forward collision avoidance system can detect the presence of cyclists in addition to pedestrians and vehicles. This system works even when the vehicle is turning.

Inside the cabin of the EX, there are wood graphics and elegant interior lighting that uses LEDs in the vanity mirrors and overhead lights. Wireless charging is very convenient to use.

On the outside of the EX, a few things have been enhanced. This trim has a smart power tailgate and panoramic sunroof, two components that can be appreciated on a regular basis.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

These two trims differ in price by only about $3,000. For that extra amount of money, a customer could get a more upscale vehicle with a panoramic sunroof, hands-free tailgate, and wireless charging, among other quality components.

However, not everyone has that extra money to spend. The S is a solid option and has many of the advanced systems people are looking for. From its capable, efficient powertrain to its comfortable and modern cabin, it really does have a lot going for it.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

An eight-inch touchscreen can be found in every Sorento Hybrid. It comes along with many desirable features, such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Voice recognition adds another way to control the system, and there are also controls mounted on the steering wheel.

In recognition of the fact that groups often travel with multiple devices, Kia has put in two USB outlets in each row. This way, everyone has access to a charging port. Wireless charging is part of the EX's technology package.

How Does It Perform?

A 1.6-liter turbocharged engine is one of the mechanical components in the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid. It has four cylinders and is used in conjunction with an electric motor. Net horsepower is 227, and torque is 258 pound-feet. Fuel efficiency is a strength; this vehicle can achieve up to 39 miles per gallon.

All of the hybrid versions of this SUV are only available as front-wheel-drive models. Those who occasionally tow items can do so with this model. The S is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds, and the EX is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

In recent years, Kia has worked hard on designing vehicles that people can have total confidence in. With the Sorento Hybrid, it's clear that the company paid a lot of attention to keeping people safe.

This SUV comes standard with forward collision avoidance-assist. This program has the ability to sense when the Kia is approaching other vehicles and pedestrians too quickly. The Sorento Hybrid is also able to sense when it's veering out of a lane, about to back up into cross traffic or hit an object, and likely to swipe another vehicle when changing lanes. In any of these situations, the driver will be given a warning, and the Kia will be able to take appropriate action by correcting steering or hitting the brakes.

On the higher trim of the Sorento Hybrid, there is the addition of smart cruise control. It can adjust the speed of the vehicle if the car in front is slowing down or speeding up, and it can bring the Sorento to a stop in case there is a lot of traffic congestion.

What's the Interior Like?

There's an ideal amount of room inside the cabin of a Sorento Hybrid. Leg room in the front is 41.4 inches, and in the second row, things get even better. The two passengers in the middle row get to enjoy 41.7 inches of leg room. The third row isn't as large, but it still has nearly 30 inches of leg room for the two people who may be riding in the back. The standard cargo capacity of 16 cubic feet can be expanded significantly by folding down all the rear seats.

All of the Sorento Hybrid models are nicely equipped. They have features like Smart Key entry, remote start, and a dual-zone temperature control system to make things more convenient for drivers and passengers. Regardless of what trim is selected, the seats are covered in a SynTex material. This synthetic material is soft while being durable and easy to clean. Heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat are other standard features.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

Many SUVs are similar in size to the Kia Sorento Hybrid. The Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander are close competitors to the Kia because they are available as hybrids. The Honda Pilot and Chevy Traverse are some examples of SUVs that aren't available as hybrids but may share other things in common with the Sorento.
