2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?
Once upon a time, the MKX was Lincoln's mid-size two-row SUV. But, in 2019, the Lincoln Nautilus took its place and gave Lincoln the boost it needed. The Nautilus offers the luxury Lincoln was once a top-seller for, and the 2021 line-up makes some upgrades that enhance its luxury even more.
The 2020 Nautilus saw the discontinuation of the mid-tier trim level known as the Select, leaving the line-up with the Base, Reserve, and Black Label trims. And those do not change for 2021. What does change, however, is their interior designs. The MKX was a dated atrocity, and the 2019 and 2020 Nautilus models still needed some refinement. Lincoln listened to consumers and, for 2021, redesigned the dash. It is lower and longer than before, creating a greater sense of space up front. Lincoln's designers felt as though it should look like a calming ocean horizon, and that aesthetic totally works.
2021 introduces a few new interior color combinations to the Nautilus. If you dig light neutrals, then Sandstone might be your thing. Of course, if you want to go darker, the Black Ebony with Roast accents will remind of you of a steaming cup of delicious coffee. The Black Label trim has a long list of color schemes, ranging from deep blues to creamy whites. Also, new for 2021 is the Flight treatment that you can also get on the Aviator.
Like the Sync 3 infotainment system? Then you will love the Sync 4. Ford/Lincoln just rolled it out for 2020, and it is a superb successor to the Sync 3. User-friendly and current, the Sync 4 offers over-the-air updates and natural voice recognition as part of its updates. This system also comes with a new 13.2-inch touchscreen display for crisper, clearer graphics than before.
What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?
As already mentioned, the 2021 Lincoln Nautilus ahs three trim levels: the Base, Reserve, and Black Label. A turbocharged 2.0-L 4-cylinder engine comes on each (optionally for the Black Label), producing 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the front wheels or (optionally) all four wheels. You can optionally upgrade to a 2.7-L V6 engine on the Reserve or get it standard on the Black Label. This engine produces a power output of 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque and comes with standard all-wheel drive.
As far as features go, the Base starts you out with a solid foundation. This trim has heated front seats with power adjustability, memory settings for the driver's seat, and simulated leather upholstery adorning the seats. The Sync 4 infotainment system comes equipped, and you get smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a blind-spot monitoring system come on the list of standard driver aids.
Opting for the Base's Equipment Group 101A package will get you premium leather upholstery, a hands-free liftgate, a built-in navigation system, and the HomeLink universal garage door opener.
On the mid-tier Reserve trim, you get the Equipment Group 101A, plus a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel. Add to that ventilation on the front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and - if you go for the V6 engine - an adaptive suspension system. You can also opt for the Co-Pilot360 Plus package, which gives you more driver aids and a surround-view camera system. You can also opt for a 13- or 19-speaker Revel premium sound system and upgraded front seats.
The Black Label standardizes basically everything that comes as an option on the Reserve. Of course, it also standardizes the V6 engine, meaning you get the adaptive suspension and larger 21-inch wheels equipped. This trim also gives you special concierge services and interior color schemes.
Which Trim is Right for Me?
Sticking to the middle of the road is a good strategy here. The Reserve trim level gives you enough standard features and leaves enough room for customization with options. It is more affordable than the Black Label and still gives you access to the V6 engine, which we would recommend equipping if you want a thrilling ride quality from a second-row mid-size luxury SUV.
What Kind of Technology Does it Have?
As we already glossed over, the Nautilus is loaded with Lincoln's latest technology. The Sync 4 and 13.2-inch touchscreen are the biggest advancements this year and are indeed quite welcome. The Co-Pilot360 system bundles a lot of driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning. Option for the Co-Pilot360 Plus gets you even more and has the ultra-helpful 360-degree surround view camera included. We also like the upgraded 19-speaker Revel sound system for its impressive concert-like quality and recommend getting this particular feature if you're a music-lover.
How Does It Perform?
The Nautilus's 2.7-L V6 engine is worth the cost to upgrade since it gets a nice boost in power. It isn't as powerful as others in this segment, but the delivery from the 8-speed is smooth. You will not feel its low-gear shifts, and modulating the gas pedal feels natural. You will get some body roll while rounding through corners, even with the sticky summer tires equipped. The Nautilus isn't meant to be pushed for sporty driving but is otherwise totally capable as a daily driver.
Is It Safe and Reliable?
The Nautilus received a perfect five-star overall score from NHTSA, and IIHS assigned it all "good" marks across the board. Equipped with the Co-Pilot360, the Nautilus has a lot of safety features that can be helpful. And, as far as reliability goes, buyers form the past few years are raving about how comfortable and powerful the Nautilus really is.
What's the Interior Like?
The cabin is nothing short of luxurious. The new color schemes are attractive, and the lowered dash does a great job of opening up space. There is room for everyone to stretch out and relax. The panoramic sunroof is the one boon, as it takes away head space from rear seat occupants.
What are the Alternatives to this Model?
Not feeling the Nautilus? Its top rivals include the Volvo XC60 and Acura RDX. The XC60 offers spacious seating in its obviously Scandinavian-style cabin. A plug-in hybrid variant is available if you are looking for better fuel efficiency. The RDX has about the same amount of cargo space as the Nautilus and has an upscale, spacious interior. The downside? A lot of features get bundled into expensive packages.
