Mazda CX-30 Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

Mazda hasn't made too many changes for the CX-30 for the 2021 model year. Basically, there have been two changes. The first one is that customers now have the choice of getting turbocharged engines. A turbocharged engine will definitely make this vehicle feel more exciting. The other change is that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have become standard.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

Customers have many options to consider with the 2021 Mazda CX-30. The base model is called the 2.5 S, and like the Select, Preferred, and Premium, it runs on a 186-horsepower engine. This entry-level trim has smartphone compatibility and a large screen. Other convenient amenities are remote entry and push button start. It's very generous that Mazda has put in a comprehensive safety package on this model.

The Select is the next available trim. Like the 2.5 S, it has LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights. However, it has privacy glass and leatherette seats. It's been upgraded with 18-inch wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and monitors that can keep track of rear cross-traffic and vehicles in the Mazda's blind spots.

At the Preferred level, there are a few major changes. This trim is the first to come with a power moonroof, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat with a memory function. The Premium goes even further, with leather upholstery, SiriusXM, and navigation. The Premium has a power liftgate as well, which can be quite convenient, and it has adaptive front lighting that allows the headlights to adjust their angle if that would better light up the road.

The next trims all have turbocharged engines. The 2.5 Turbo does feel upscale since it has a moonroof, but it goes back to having leatherette seats and doesn't have the navigation that the others have. The 2.5 Turbo Premium would be a consideration if someone wants the faster engine and navigation. The 2.5 Turbo Premium has an upgraded sound system, paddle shifters, and a heated steering wheel.

At the top of the lineup, the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus has the most to offer. It's actually fairly similar to the 2.5 Turbo Premium, but it has the addition of several advanced safety systems. Its 360-degree camera and parking sensors can be useful in helping drivers avoid getting scratches or dings, and its rear automatic braking can prevent certain kinds of accidents.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

The first thing to decide is whether a prospective buyer wants the regular engine or the turbo one. The regular engine isn't slow by any means, but the turbo one can make driving much more thrilling.

Then, one has to think about whether the extra features are worth the cost. If not, the base model would be perfectly sufficient. For those who have more luxurious tastes, the Preferred or Premium models would fit the bill.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

Technology is one of the reasons why the CX-30 may be so appealing to potential buyers. Every trim has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, along with Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, and an 8.8-inch center screen. Many models are enhanced with SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Bose sound systems with 12 speakers, which are an upgrade over the standard eight-speaker system. Plus, integrated navigation has been built into many of the more upscale CX-30 models.

How Does It Perform?

The CX-30 runs on a 2.5-liter engine. The lower trims have standard four-cylinder engines, while the higher trims use engines with turbochargers (and they also have four cylinders). The difference between the two types of engine is evident when looking at horsepower and torque. The standard engine delivers 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, whereas the turbo engine can provide the vehicle with up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.

This vehicle is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. If someone chooses a turbo model, then that CX-30 will automatically come with all-wheel drive. Mazda's AWD system is called i-ACTIV, and it has an off-road traction assist function to help the vehicle make its way through particularly challenging conditions.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Mazda has done a great job of building safe vehicles that people can count on. It's really impressive that there are so many standard driver-assist components in the 2021 CX-30, especially since it's such an affordable vehicle.

In all of the trims, there is adaptive cruise control so that the Mazda can stay a safe distance away from the vehicle in front of it. There are also warning and mitigation systems that can engage when a driver is about to hit the car in front of it or is starting to drift out of a lane. In addition, there are automatic high beams, a rearview camera that's very useful when backing up, and an alert system that can warn drivers when they need to re-focus on the roads.

On all of the models except for the entry-level trim, drivers can take advantage of blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring. Adaptive front lights as well as a 360-degree camera may be found on the more premium models.

What's the Interior Like?

Though it's on the smaller side, the CX-30 has comfortable seating and a nicely appointed cabin. Cloth seats are only found in the base model, with all the others having leatherette or leather seats. Many of the models have a dark interior color scheme, though there are some neutral and white hues available in the higher trims.

Leg room is about 36 inches in the back seat, and this should be sufficient for most situations. The cargo area in the back has a volume of approximately 20 cubic feet, and people will appreciate that the rear seats can easily be lowered to create more storage space.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

There are many choices for customers looking for compact crossovers and SUVs. They include the Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, Lexus UX, Hyundai Kona.
