Subaru Legacy Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

Subaru has kept things mostly the same when transitioning the Legacy from the 2020 to the 2021 model year. There have only been three minor updates.

The first is that adaptive LED headlamps are standard. These types of headlights are responsive to changes in steering. As the car turns, so do the lights, so that it can be easier to see the road ahead when making turns at night.

The other two changes have been made with safety in mind. The Legacy now has a passenger's seatbelt warning. It'll chime if the seat detects the presence of a passenger but the seatbelt hasn't been used.

The last update is a rear-seat alert feature. If someone has opened up the rear doors before starting the trip but doesn't open them up after finishing a trip, this system will engage. This situation could indicate that a pet, child, or something else has been left behind. A simple warning message and audible noise will be given so that the driver is reminded to check the back seat.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

The 2021 Subaru Legacy comes in six trims. The base model is simply named the Legacy, and the other trims are the Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

In the base model, there is symmetrical all-wheel drive and many driver-assist systems. There is also a STARLINK infotainment system with smartphone integration and SiriusXM. These are all reasons why Subaru has been able to attract a lot of attention.

With the Premium, there are 17-inch wheels and a larger touchscreen that measures 11.6 inches rather than seven inches. There's a power-adjustable driver's seat as well as heated front seats. The Sport is a little more athletic in style. It sits on 18-inch wheels finished in black, and it has LED fog lights and a spoiler in the back. Its seats have some personality with red contrast stitching. Plus, it has keyless access with push-button start.

The Limited has leather seats to make it feel more sophisticated. The audio system has been upgraded with Harman Kardon components and 12 speakers. In the Limited, drivers benefit from having blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

At the end of the lineup, the Limited XT and Touring XT both use more powerful engines that can generate 260 horsepower. In the Limited XT, there's a moonroof and heated steering wheel. The Touring XT has special Nappa leather seats and chrome accents. It has the best technology, with a front camera in addition to the rear camera. Finally, its front seats are heated and ventilated.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

For those who value performance, the Limited XT and Touring XT would be the smart choices. They have the turbocharged engines that can make driving a lot more exciting.

If the standard engine is sufficient, then there are still many remaining choices. The Premium would be recommended if one wants the convenience of a power-operated driver's seat, a temperature control system with two zones, and heating elements in the front seats. It also has the larger touchscreen that customers will appreciate.

The base model isn't a bad choice at all, since it has advanced technology. The Sport has a bold aesthetic, and the Limited treats people to more high-end amenities.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

Every 2021 Subaru Legacy has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and HD Radio. Bluetooth and dual USB ports are other standard components. On the base model, there's a seven-inch touchscreen. It gets upgraded to an 11.6-inch touchscreen on all of the other trims. On the Premium, Sport, and Limited, there's the option to get navigation. Navigation is standard on the XT models.

Starting with the Premium, there is 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability. This is a bonus feature that some people will use quite frequently. It can be used with multiple devices and can allow people to stay connected to their networks while on the road.

How Does It Perform?

The type of engine that the Legacy has will depend on the trim selected. The first four trims run on 2.5-liter engines that have four cylinders. These engines can churn out 182 horsepower and over 175 pound-feet of torque. This makes for a lively ride.

If customers prefer even more power, they should look into the XT trims. They use 2.4-liter engines, and the major distinction is that these engines have turbochargers. This allows them to pump out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This is very impressive given that the Legacy is a sedan.

Symmetrical all-wheel drive is built into every Legacy, as is a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Subaru has a reputation for building safe and reliable vehicles. One of the reasons people think so highly of the brand is that its models incorporate driver-assist technology. The Legacy has the ability to adjust its speed according to what the surrounding traffic is doing, hit the brakes to hopefully avoid a frontal collision, and correct its steering if a driver is drifting to the side of a lane. These abilities are all part of the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package.

Automatic high beams are another standard component. Many of the higher trims have blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring as well as reverse automatic braking.

What's the Interior Like?

The Legacy's cabin feels spacious, as there is 39.5 inches of leg room in the back seat. There can be power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, and even the steering wheel can be heated. Most trims have leather wrapped on their steering wheels and gear shifters. Cloth, sport cloth, leather, and Nappa leather are available as seating upholstery.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

A number of sedans compete with the Legacy. The Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, and Toyota Camry are all similar in style. Since the Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive, it has an advantage over these other models.
