About the Toyota Land Cruiser:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

For 2021, the Toyota Land Cruise makes minor changes. Those who have their heart set on the Heritage Edition may be happy to learn that it is now available with a third row of seats. This same model is also now available in Magnetic Gray and Classic Silver paint. Toyota has announced that the Land Cruiser will not be coming back in 2022. However, the door has been left open for a return later down the road.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

There are only two trim levels when it comes to the 2021 Land Cruiser. The base model is equipped like one would expect a large luxury SUV to be. It has LED headlights, alloy wheels, skid plates, and tow hooks in both the front and the back. A sunroof and auto-dimming side mirrors are also included.

Moving inside the base model of the Land Cruiser, drivers find heated and ventilated front seats along with heated second-row seats. The touchscreen is 9-inches, and size and the audio system has 14 speakers. A wireless charging pad and satellite radio come standard.

The Heritage Edition is very similar. It gets a unique grille and dark chrome trim for the exterior. This model also sits on bronze wheels for added flair. Both the available trims come with a comprehensive suite of safety features.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

These two trims are fairly close in price. The choice between them boils down to two things - seating and appearance. When going with the base model, a third-row comes standard. This feature costs extra for the Heritage Edition, potentially deterring larger families. If that is not a consideration, buyers will have to decide which trim level has a more appealing outer appearance.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

The most surprising thing about the Land Cruiser in 2021 is that it does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Still, it does come with a 9-inch touchscreen and 14-speaker audio system. Bluetooth and a USB port help to somewhat make up for the lack of smartphone integration. Both HD and satellite radio are included, along with a wireless charging pad.

For the base model only, a rear-seat entertainment system is available. It features two 11.6-inch screens and a DVD player. Two pairs of wireless headphones are included as well.

How Does It Perform?

With only two trims, it is hardly surprising that there is just one powertrain available for the 2021 Land Cruiser. The 5.7L V8 delivers a solid 381-horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic and four-wheel drive both come standard.

When it is moving, the Land Cruiser does great. The steering is responsive, and the brakes provide ample stopping power. Parking this beast of an SUV can be a bit tricky due to its size, however. While the Land Cruiser has become more of a luxury ride than a true off-roader, it does a decent job off of the pavement.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Like many high-end luxury vehicles, the Toyota Land Cruiser does not get crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Still, it comes with an impressively long list of standard driver aids. A few highlights include adaptive cruise control, a surround-view parking camera, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring.

The Land Cruiser is a well-made SUV. It has earned a score of four out of five from J.D. Power when it comes to predicted reliability. This is above average.

What's the Interior Like?

The base model comes with seating for up to eight, while the Heritage Edition has seating for five as its standard. The front two rows are spacious and provide plenty of legroom. As for the third-row, it is only suited for smaller children if the journey is going to be longer than a few minutes.

Many high-quality and upscale materials are used for the cabin, which also does an impressive job of blocking out wind and road noise. A heated steering wheel, climate-controlled front seats, and heated second-row seats are just a few of the luxury features that come standard.

With 16.1 cubic feet behind the third row, the Land Cruiser offers an average amount of cargo space for its vehicle class. The maximum cargo capacity measures 82.8 cubic feet. For whatever reason, the third-row seats flip up rather than fold down, somewhat limiting the practicality of the vehicle.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

The Lexus LX 570 is very similar to the Land Cruiser. It has the same engine and is roughly the same size. Working against the Lexus, however, is the fact that it comes standard with only two rows. It also has a frustrating infotainment system and a significantly higher price tag.

Perhaps a better option would be the Land Rover Range Rover. This large luxury SUV is capable both on and off of the pavement. It is also available with a hybrid powertrain and more modern technology features. Other large luxury SUVs to consider include the Lincoln Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade.
