Volkswagen Golf GTI Overview:

2020 vs 2021: What's the Difference?

2021 marks the year that we say a fond farewell to the Volkswagen Golf. Having been in production since 1974, the Golf has seen many ups and downs as the auto industry has evolved over time. The Golf GTI will at least continue on, and we know that, for 2022, the GTI will be totally new as an introduction to its eighth generation.

But the Golf itself will be gone.

The 2020 Golf saw the line-up reduced to just a single trim level - the TSI. Wi-Fi hot spot became standard, but the 8-inch touchscreen and some driver aids were canned along with the trim levels that they had come on.

As for 2021, nothing changes. It feels as though Volkswagen has just given up entirely on the original Golf and is letting it die a slow and painful death.

What Do the Various Trim Levels Offer?

What do you get on the 2021 Golf TSI? This sole trim level is powered by a standard 1.4-L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that can be matched up with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain generates a power output of 147 hp and 184 lb- ft of torque. This power gets delivered to the front wheels.

The list of safety features that come standard on the Volkswagen Golf include 4-wheel ABS, integrated turn signals in the side mirrors, an engine immobilizer, daytime running lights, vehicle stability control, emergency braking assist, forward collision warning, and a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Golf TSI's exterior comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, automatic windshield wipers, and keyless entry and ignition. Options that get left for the exterior include a bumperdillo, wheel locks, splash guards, and a roof edge spoiler.

Inside of the Golf TSI's cabin, you get a fair amount of tech features. These features include a 6-speaker sound system with AM/FM radio, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, and VW's Car-Net apps, which includes smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are a USB port and a memory card slot as well. Wi-Fi hot spot connectivity is also standard issue.

Creature comforts are about what you should expect to find. The Golf TSI gives you a single-zone automatic climate control system, seatback storage on the front seats, cruise control, dual illuminated vanity mirrors on the front sun visors, front and rear cup holders, door pockets up front and in the rear, electric power steering, a tilting and telescoping steering column, a rear-view camera, and audio and cruise controls mounted onto the multi-functional steering wheel. Also, the side mirrors are heated, and you get hands-free entry and one-touch power windows.

Options left for the cabin include a prism mirror, the HomeLink universal garage opener integrated into the rear-view mirror, carpeted floor mats, a luggage net, a first aid kit, and a rubber mats kit.

The front bucket seats are done in leatherette material. The driver's seat is manually adjustable four ways while the front passenger's seat is only 2-way manually adjustable. Both seats come with a multi-level heating function, and the split-folding rear seat comes with a pass-through folding center arm rest.

Which Trim is Right for Me?

Obviously, we can only recommend one trim level since that is all there is on the 2021 Volkswagen Golf. The TSI four-door hatchback gives you six body color choices and the option of picking whether you want a manual or automatic transmission. If you want to get more features for your money, you will have to upgrade to the Golf GFI, as anything above its base S trim level is going to offer you more than the TSI.

What Kind of Technology Does it Have?

Technology on the Golf has been trimmed down for the final model year. You can only get a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, but it does at least come with VW Car-Net apps and Wi-Fi hot spot connectivity. It isn't the latest-and-greatest in VW's technology though. The 6-speaker sound system is the only audio system available, and it is pretty basic.

How Does It Perform?

The Golf TSI has a slower acceleration speed than its top rivals, making it from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.3 seconds. The engine might not be powerful, but both transmissions offer quick shifting capabilities that assist with smooth enough power delivery to the front wheels. The Golf has lost all sense of sportiness, which this German auto used to ne renowned for. The tires have barely any road grip, which makes trying to come to a panic stop feel rather dangerous. This small hatch takes about 132 feet to make a panic stop from 60 mph, which is much longer than others in its segment.

Is It Safe and Reliable?

Aside from its crummy tires costing the Golf its road grip, the TSI does have a good amount of safety features left on it that keep drivers feeling somewhat confident. Also, NHTSA has given the Golf 5 stars overall on its 2021 safety tests. A few points were lost on the front crash barrier and rollover assessments, but they weren't enough to detract from the final score.

What's the Interior Like?

The Golf is all about simplicity. You won't be inundated with controls along the dash, and what is there is easy to use. The controls mounted onto the steering wheel take a little getting-used-to but will become intuitive enough with a little time. Front seat occupants get a ton of space, and anyone under 6 feet tall should do okay in the rear. Head space up front is more than plentiful. And, with a comfortable ride quality, it is easy to relax.

What are the Alternatives to this Model?

The Golf TSI's closest alternative is the Golf GTI. It is more powerful, offers more trim levels, and is outfitted with more of VW's up-to-date technology. Going into 2022, the GTI will be totally overhauled. But if the GTI doesn't strike your fancy, the Honda Civic hatchback might be more your speed. Exceedingly fuel-efficient and powerful at the same time, the Civic is comfortable and offers an abundance of current-gen technology.
