Jaguar has been one of the top names in luxury vehicles for decades now. And this company is still creating waves. Take, for example, the I-PACE. Introduced for the 2019 model year, this SUV is Jag's first all-electric one. This vehicle is upscale, stylish, accelerates with ease, and has some strong handling capabilities. Of course, this all comes at quite the cost. But if you're searching for a luxury EV SUV, you probably are not too concerned about the initial cost.

You will, of course, save on fuel since this is an EV. And each trim level uses the same 90 kWh battery and 394 hp engine. There is an all-wheel drive system that comes standard, and you can get up to 234 miles of electric range on this SUV.

You just have to make the choice between its four trim levels: the base S trim, the SE, the HSE, and the line-topping First Edition. Each one offers a little something different. That is why you need to read through to the end of this comparison review. We will go over the specs and features of all three trim levels and, in the end, declare which one we think present the best overall deal. Without further adieu, it is time to jump right into the 2020 Jaguar I-PACE.

 

Compare the 2020 Jaguar I-PACE S vs SE Trims. What is the difference?

The 2020 Jaguar I-PACE starts its line-up off with the S trim level. This trim level starts off at around $69,500 and is equipped with the standard powertrain. It can get from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, which is indeed quite speedy. There is a 4-wheel independent suspension up front and an independent multi-link suspension system in the rear. There are gas pressurized shocks, an anti-roll bar up front, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic height adjustable shocks with driver control, rack and pinion power steering, and speed-sensing capabilities for the steering system. Options include your choice of 20- or 22-inch wheels, wheel locks, and an aluminum spare wheel.

When it comes to the exterior, you get your choice between 12 paint colors. Standard features on the exterior include a spoiler, a power liftgate, a body made of galvanized steel and aluminum, body-colored front and rear bumpers, a black front grille with a metal surround, and power side mirrors with built-in turn indicators and a heating function. You can opt for an automatically dimming function on the side mirrors, a carbon fiber grille, metallic paint, and body-colored carbon fiber rub strips on the front and rear bumpers.

The interior of the S has a lot of fine features as well. As you might reasonably expect, there are a ton of creature comforts. Starting with the convenience features, the S trim level comes equipped with 6 USB ports, Jaguar's smart key proximity system, a rear storage tray underneath the seat, a power fuel remote release, power windows with one-touch up/down for the driver's window, spacious rear door bins, illuminated vanity mirrors on both of the sun visors up front, a built-in navigation system, voice recognition, a day/night rear view mirror, a panoramic sunroof, three 12-volt DC power outlets, a dual zone automatic climate control system, a mini overhead console with storage, a sport steering wheel that is part of the tilt and telescoping steering column, the HomeLink universal transceiver (which controls your garage door, safety system, and electronics from the comfort of your vehicle), cupholders for the front and rear seats, big door bins for the front passenger and driver, and a valet function. There is also an air filter, illuminated entry, and cruise control.

Inspect the seats and trim, and you will find a cargo cover, a front center armrest, carpeted floor mats in the front and rear, a center armrest with storage in the rear row, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with a heating function, chic and comfortable leatherette upholstery, a carpeted cargo area, a tire mobility kit, a full Morzine cloth headliner, aluminum accents, a piano black console insert, and a light for the cargo area. If you want to spend a little more, you can get optional heating for the rear seats and a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat.

There are a lot of lighting and electrical features to be found in the S trim, many of which are related to vehicle safety and driver aids. You get a door ajar alarm, rear window defrost, a tire pressure monitoring system, a lights on light, a trunk ajar light, a fading dome light, front reading lights, beautiful ambient lighting, a digital display cluster, a rear view camera, a trip odometer, a digital compass, automatic high beam headlights, a blind spot monitoring system, windshield wipers that can sense rain, lane departure warning, an outside temperature display, and an in-radio display digital clock. Optional features include a heated front windshield, front fog lights, heated front windshield wiper jets, illuminated sill plates, a headlight washer, and a head-up display.

Of course, those are all great features, but if you're willing to pay over $80,000, jump up to the SE trim. The SE trim has the same mechanical features as the S, and it rides atop 20-inch wheels with the option for 22-inch wheels instead. There is a rear wing spoiler on the outside, and you can still opt for the carbon fiber grille. Pretty much everything on the exterior looks the same.

On the inside, you get three memory settings for the driver and passengers seats (which includes audio, HVAC, and the side mirrors). Adaptive cruise control gets added as well, and it comes with stop and go distance pacing. The tilt and telescoping sport steering wheel is heated and has a bunch of controls mounted onto it for easy access for the driver. The glovebox has a cooling feature, and it does have a lock for security. The InControl Navigation Pro system includes voice recognition, and the liftgate is hands-free.

If you're interested and can afford it, there are some nice upholstery options available. The simulated suede/cloth upholstery feels nice to the touch, and you can opt for a cloth door panel trim. You can also opt to add power adjustable side bolsters to the driver's and front passenger's seat for extra support. Other options include a 12-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seat, a leather dashboard, a cargo partition, thigh support on the front passenger seat, a simulated suede headliner, genuine wood door panel inserts, and heated rear seats.

Standard infotainment features include 4G LTE WiFi connectivity, an 11-speaker premium sound system, AM/FM Radio, HD Radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, speed sensitive volume, and smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can upgrade to a 15-speaker sound system if you really want to amp things up.

Now, what could the HSE possibly have that makes it an even more inclusive option than the SE? Of course, it is loaded with all of the standard safety equipment that comes on the lower trim levels. You get high speed emergency braking on the forward collision mitigation system, power door locks, LED daytime running lights, brake assist, a panic alarm, perimeter lights that come on as you approach the vehicle, an engine immobilizer, electronic stability and traction control, a vehicle tracker system, and a good number of airbags.

The HSE's engine is what comes on the lower trim levels. It will still get you 80 mpge in the city and 72 mpge on the highway. Also, the exterior design is mostly the same, save for a few very minor details. Inside, things are similar as well. You do get two seatback pockets, a proximity cargo access remote release, gorgeous Windsor leather upholstery in the front and rear, a leather-clad steering wheel, driver and front passenger seat that has power adjustable side bolsters, LuxTec leatherette trim on the door panels, 12-way power adjustable front seats with built-in thigh support, cargo tie-downs, a piano black console insert, power reclining for the front seats, ventilation on the front seats, genuine wood door panel inserts, and heated rear seats.

The infotainment set-up gets a nice boost as well. Standard infotainment features on the HSE include the 15-speaker Meridian sound system with an 825-watt premium amplifier. Other than that, however, you will not find a ton of differences between the SE and HSE when it comes to multimedia features.

You're probably wondering what exactly the First Edition is and why it sits at the top of this line-up. Jaguar made this model in order to capture the essence of the I-PACE Concept car. It rides atop 20-inch 5-split spoke Style 5070 alloy wheels that have a technical gray with polish finish. There are premium LED headlights with signature daytime running lights, and the front sport seats are ventilated while the rear seats are heated. Oh, and they get the Windsor leather treatment too.

If that's not enough, get the extended Windsor leather upgrade. There is stunning Light Oyster suede/cloth headlining, First Edition gloss charcoal ash wood veneer, the Touch Pro Duo, interactive driver display, head-up display, adaptive dynamics, adaptive surface response, four-zone climate control, and the awesome Meridian sound system.

 

Which Trim to Choose?

The I-PACE is set to rival competitors like the Tesla models, and, so far, it is doing a decent job of garnering positive attention. Drivers like how sporty it is in terms of performance. It doesn't feel like your average EV, that's for sure! But which trim level is the best of the bunch?

Our pick has to be the SE. While it lacks some of the standard features that the HSE has, it provides a nice balance between performance and creature comforts, and the price can be more easily justified. The S trim is a great base level, though, so if you cannot swing the extra for the SE, the S is a good pick. But you will likely want to add more features on, and that cost can rack up pretty quickly. The SE has enough standard features for the price, and they should satisfy almost every buyer.

The I-PACE might be one of the new kids on the block when it comes to EVs, but it is definitely one of the hottest picks right now. The 2020 Jaguar I-PACE is packed with innovation, so you really cannot go wrong with any of their trim levels. It might even be enough to curb the enthusiasm some people have for Tesla's models at this moment. Jaguar knows how to keep the pace, and the I-PACE is proof of that.
