2021 Subaru Crosstrek vs Mazda CX-30

2021 Crosstrek vs CX-30 - How do they stack up? Which is Better?

Many people who appreciate driving a capable and versatile vehicle but don't require something too large may find crossovers or compact SUVs to be ideal. Fortunately, there are currently numerous small crossover/SUVs available; two excellent examples being the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX-30.

Subaru and Mazda have focused on creating stylish, high-quality vehicles while keeping their prices relatively low. This means the Crosstrek and CX-30 are likely to appeal to a broad audience. These two models are quite similar, so this detailed comparison should help prospective buyers decide which one is the better fit.

The Powertrain

The Subaru Crosstrek offers drivers four unique trims, each featuring its own engine and transmission possibilities. Ranging from the base model with a 2.0-liter engine capable of churning out 152 horsepower to two upgraded versions using powerful 2.5 liter engines that boast 182 horses, this popular ride has something for every driver -- including those who love stick shifts! While not available in all models, there's also an ingenious Linearatronic continuously variable automatic transmission on offer too.

The hybrid version of the Subaru Crosstrek offers an impressive combination of 148 horsepower and electric motor, making tackling tough terrain a breeze. Although its towing capacity is slightly smaller than other trims at 1,000 pounds versus 1,500 pounds for others – it still provides plenty of pulling power for drivers needing extra help when hauling cargo on their adventures.

The Mazda CX-30 has something for everyone, from the casual driver to those looking for thrills on the road. Its two engine options cater to people with varied needs and styles; one is a 2.5L powerplant that delivers 186hp/186 lb.-ft., while an advanced turbocharged version ups output to 250 hp and 320 lb.-ft., providing more oomph than even some of its closest competitors can offer! Both models are also capable of hauling up 1,500 pounds when properly equipped – so feel free check with your local dealer about any added attachments you may require prior purchase.

Customers on lower trims of the CX-30 have the option to select either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD). The AWD system features off-road traction assist to give Mazda better grip when road or trail conditions are slippery. Higher models come standard with turbo engines in addition to standard AWD, providing improved handling not only during snowy or icy conditions but also cornering or accelerating.

It's a little different with the Crosstrek, as all trims come standard with all-wheel drive. Subaru's symmetrical AWD system keeps your vehicle balanced and stable in any conditions. X-MODE, an available feature that further increases traction, also has Hill Descent Control program to limit unintentional acceleration when traveling down steep hills. Overall, it appears as if Subaru Crosstrek is more durable and rugged than its CX-30 counterpart if it has the turbo engine installed.

When considering fuel efficiency, the Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX-30 offer slightly different average miles per gallon. For instance, if you opt for a front wheel drive CX-30 with an advanced engine then yourin town MPG will be 25 while on the highway it'll reach 33 - making long drives more economical. With regards to performance from its 2.0 liter engine size, The Crosstrek can make 28 MPG locally and up to 34 when out of town taking in all that great open road.

The hybrid Crosstrek is an entirely different beast, boasting an estimated combined fuel economy of 90 MPGe. If anyone is serious about cutting their emissions, this trim should be their top pick. Unfortunately, limited supplies of this model exist.

Drivability

Many reviews of the CX-30 say this SUV is a lot of fun to drive. It was clearly designed with drivers in mind and boasts sharp handling that anyone can appreciate. While the Subaru Crosstrek may not be quite so sporty, it still manages to provide convenience and practicality when driven regularly.

The dimensions of these two models are similar in some respects. The Crosstrek measures 176.5 inches long and it's neither too wide nor tall, offering it plenty of ground clearance at 8.7 inches - ideal for driving over uneven terrain. In comparison, the CX-30 measures 173 inches long and narrower than its larger sibling; nonetheless, it boasts a higher ground clearance of eight inches as well.

From these numbers, it appears that the Crosstrek offers slightly more interior room than the CX-30. For instance, its 20.8 cubic feet behind the seating area compared to 20.2 in the CX-30 is impressive. When all seats have been lowered, maximum cargo capacity in both vehicles is 55.3 cubic feet for the Subaru Crosstrek and only 45.2 in the Mazda CX-30.

Both models' second-row legroom measures slightly under 37 inches. As such, the back seats in these vehicles should be comfortable for a few passengers on longer trips, though if three tall people are sitting together in the back together it might start feeling crowded after some time.

Subaru and Mazda recognize that technology will be integral in helping consumers make their decisions. That's why both manufacturers are equipping class-leading models like 2021 Crosstrek and CX-30 with exceptional technological features to give buyers an unmistakable edge on the road.

The base model of the Subaru Crosstrek features a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto functionality. All other trims offer SiriusXM for expanded entertainment options while Wi-Fi connectivity is standard. Higher trims boast eight-inch screens with navigation programs integrated into more advanced infotainment systems for even greater convenience.

An optional Harman Kardon premium sound system is another available upgrade. This upgrade enhances the audio quality with a 432-watt amplifier and eight speakers; otherwise, Crosstrek models typically feature either four or six speakers depending on trim level.

On the CX-30, an eight-speaker audio system comes standard. Other standard features include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Pandora radio integration and an 8.8-inch screen. On some higher trims there are navigation, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, SiriusXM Traffic & Travel Link as well as Bose sound systems with 12 speakers.

Safety

Maintaining people's safety is always a top priority. Years ago, anti-lock brakes and three-point seatbelts were all that was expected. Nowadays, rearview cameras are commonplace in vehicles like Crosstreks and CX-30s as more are designed with driver-assist technology for added peace of mind.

Subaru refers to their safety package EyeSight Drier Assist Technology. This includes pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, lane centering and adaptive cruise control; it's standard on three of the five trims while being available but not standard on the first two. Reverse automatic braking (which helps avoid backing into objects by accident), blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert are other features available on select Crosstreks; automatic high beams may also be helpful when driving in more rural areas at night.

Mazda has packed the CX-30 with a host of advanced systems, such as adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, driver attention alert, lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking - far surpassing what even the entry-level Crosstrek can offer. Furthermore, all trims except the base model feature blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert; higher ones even feature adaptive front lighting which adjusts headlights' angle to better illuminate roads. Finally, Mazda's top-tier model boasts 360 degree camera along with rear automatic braking plus parking sensors front and rear.

Which Offers the Best Value?

Determining "value" can be subjective, but looking at prices of all trims can help people decide which model offers more financial benefit. For instance, starting at $22,245, the Subaru Crosstrek starts almost exactly at the same price as a CX-30 2.5 S model at $22,050.

Subaru's Crosstrek offers plenty of style and features to choose from, with three trims - Premium ($23,295), Sport ($26.495) or Limited ($27995). The Hybrid takes things a step further by adding an eco-friendly 2.5 liter engine for $35345 that also comes equipped with leather upholstery plus optional LED fog lights and moonroof upgrade options at an additional cost on many other trim models as well.

The stylish Mazda CX-30 comes with five incredible trim levels to choose from. Starting at the Base model for $24,050, you can upgrade to Preferred ($26,450) or Premium ($28,700), both of which come equipped with standard engines and leatherette seats as well as heated front seat in the former and power moonroofs in both. For an even more impressive package there's 2.5 Turbo starting off at $30k - a great option considering it boasts better performance specs along with advanced safety systems plus leather upholstery & heated steering wheel on top two trims.

Which Model Is Better?

Consider the Subaru Crosstrek or Mazda CX-30! The former offers reliable all-wheel drive and plenty of comfort, while the latter provides an array of luxurious upgrades - like moonroofs, power lift gates, leather seating options and high tech navigation & audio systems. If you crave even higher end features though such as 360 degree cameras (not available in any version on the Crosstrek), be prepared to pay extra for them with one of these seven premium trims offered by Mazda’s CX-30.
