For decades, the Jeep Wrangler has served as an icon for drivers wanting more than paved roads -- or at least who want to look the part. At the same time, it's been unattractive to those who want quiet, bump-free rides. This year, the two sides of this coin are closer than ever before thanks to improved cabin materials and better tech. There are also more advanced safety features available for the Wrangler.

Though the way the 2019 Jeep Wrangler drives in the city is better than in previous years, it's still an old-school crawler meant for tumbling roads. Jeep designed the axles for dirt driving, and the Sport model doesn't have typical creature comforts like power accessories or air conditioning. Each trim has a fold-down windshield and a soft top to maximize the outdoor experience. The Rubicon also has extra hardware to improve traction even further.

If you want a Wrangler that has features but isn't a nuisance in the city, the middle trims are where you should look. Here is where you'll find navigation options, a big touchscreen, leather upholstery, and improved audio. You'll even have the ability to upgrade to extra safety features, like rear parking sensors and warnings to mitigate forward collisions.

As long as you're not hoping for the quietest ride on the highway, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler has a trim that will meet your needs. It's worth taking a look at no matter what kind of ride you're looking for -- but especially if that ride is off-road.

What's New for 2019?
The 2019 Jeep Wrangler is part of the fourth generation of Wranglers introduced last year. This year, you get the option to add forward collision warning as well as adaptive cruise control.

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler is a midsize SUV based on a truck.

You'll get good value with the base trim if you don't care about high-tech features, but it does lack even basic qualities. The real sweet spot is the Sport S, which offers a wealth of options for a small premium. They're the kind of options you want to live with, too, like air conditioning and power accessories.

Of course, if your goal is to hit the trails on a regular basis, then the Rubicon is the only one worth looking into. As far as engines go, you'll want the four-cylinder turbo instead of the V6 despite the increase in cost. The turbo has better fuel economy and won't suffer at high altitudes.

There are several configuration options available for the 2019 Jeep Wrangler. The two-door comes as a Sport, a Sport S, or a Rubicon, and the four-door also comes in Sahara and Moab trims.

The standard engine is a 3.6L V6 engine, coupled with a six-speed manual as default. It's better to the eight-speed automatic, though, for smoother shifting. You can also upgrade to a 2.0L turbo engine.

The base trim comes with foglights, a fold-down windshield, a steering wheel with tilt and telescoping features, and a generous list of other features. The Sport S builds on that by adding alloy wheels, power accessories, sun visors, air conditioning, and heated power mirrors.

The four-door Sahara adds another inch to the wheels and increases the driver info display. This is also where you'll get access to smartphone integration. The Moab adds to this feature list, giving you rear parking sensors, keyless entry, rock rails, and more.

The Rubicon is the top choice for off-road driving. Here, you get a steel front bumper, 17-inch alloy wheels, rock rails, and 4.0-to-1 low-range gearing.

Driving Impressions
Anyone who has driven a Wrangler before knows it's a king when taken off-road. The ladder frame does cause the 2019 Jeep Wrangler to struggle to perform in-city tasks. The old-school steering wheel and stout V6 engine don't help matters, either.

The 3.6L V6 has enough power to take you onto the freeway or climb steep grades when driving along mountain roads. Even the Rubicon, which is the heaviest trim, has little trouble holding traction. It takes 7.6 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill.

The brakes are just as reliable as the acceleration, but it does have a lengthy travel distance. It's not the best for driving around the city, but you do have greater control when tumbling off-road. It takes 128 feet to come to a stop from 60 miles per hour, which is better than pickups but worse than SUVs.

There are some steering compromises to make the off-road handling better. The Jeep can turn corners well, but the heavy Rubicon feels loose when trying to drive in a straight line. Dealing with crosswinds also presents problems.

Even though the 2019 Jeep Wrangler has a boxy shape, you can navigate mountain roads with ease. The solid axle suspension can cause the ride to twitch a little when going over potholes, though, especially if you drive the Rubicon.

Both engines are good, but the real power is in the eight-speed auto. The transmission shifts smoothly and has a natural knack for finding its gear. Cruise control maintains the speed you want with skill, even if you're going downhill.

As far as off-road is concerned, there is no stock vehicle that out-performs the Rubicon. It can come with huge 33-inch tires and lockable differentials in both the front and rear.
