The 2021 Cadillac XT5 can treat its passengers to a nice ride. As a two-row SUV, the XT5 feels spacious and comfortable, and it's capable enough to drive safely through a variety of terrain. Since Cadillac is considered a luxury brand, it makes sense that there are numerous high-end features in the cabin of the XT5. There are three trims to choose from, and this overview should provide potential customers with the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions.

It hasn't been too many years since the XT5 was first released. When it was introduced to the market, it was part of an effort to make Cadillacs feel fresh and relevant. The XT5 has found a lot of success amongst Cadillac fans. This is likely because it feels sophisticated while being versatile and not too expensive.

Since its debut, it's been upgraded in some notable ways, and now there are two available engines. A few other upgrades are Amazon Alexa, wireless smartphone compatibility, and a few high-tech components that can enhance safety and convenience.

All three trims have the same dimensions, so it's probably best to mention those now. In terms of leg room, there is 41.2 inches in the front row and 39 inches in the second row. That translates into there being plenty of room, even if there are three adults riding together in the back. Behind the seats, there's a cargo area that has a volume of over 30 cubic feet. By folding down the rear seats, cargo capacity can be expanded to 63 cubic feet. These numbers make the XT5 ideal for a lot of consumers; it has a good amount of size but doesn't feel too bulky or cumbersome.

Compare the 2021 Cadillac XT5 Luxury vs Premium Luxury Trim Level. What is the difference?

Most importantly, perhaps, the Luxury trim is limited to having the standard engine, which is a 2.0-liter turbocharged model. The engine has four cylinders, and it's paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It can generate 235 horsepower and has just over 250 pound-feet of torque.

Compared to many other compact SUVs, the Luxury does have a lot of capability. However, it doesn't have the option of getting a V6 engine like the Premium Luxury trim does. That V6 engine takes horsepower up to 310 and torque up to 271 pound-feet. For many people, this improvement is significant enough to warrant the additional cost of the Premium Luxury with the more advanced engine. Note that the V6 uses a nine-speed transmission, just like the four-cylinder uses.

There are some other ways in which the Premium Luxury is a better choice for performance-minded consumers. It has several available features that can improve overall handling and make the experience of getting behind the wheel a lot more exciting. Available on the Premium Luxury are a performance suspension system that allows for some customization, a chassis that has real-time damping suspension, and a heavy-duty cooling system that can make it easier for the engine to dissipate heat. Further, the Premium Luxury can come with a hitch guidance to make it easier to hook up a trailer to the back of the SUV.

Upon first glance, one difference between these two trims might immediately jump out at some observant consumers. The Luxury has six-spoke alloy wheels that have a pearl nickel finish while the Premium Luxury has multi-spoke alloy wheels finished in a bright silver. (Both types of wheels are 18 inches.) That being said, there are some available options that buyers of both trims can take advantage of; 20-inch wheels are available on either trim.

The side mirrors in the Luxury are body-colored, heated, and have turn signals built into them. In the Premium Luxury, the side mirrors have all of those features, plus they have an auto-dimming function. Also, the Premium Luxury has illuminated door handles, a power liftgate that has a hands-free function, and wipers that can automatically turn themselves on when it starts raining.

Perhaps the most notable change is that the Premium Luxury has a sunroof. Cadillac uses an UltraView power sunroof in the XT5, and this extends pretty far back to give the rear-seat passengers a view of the sky.

What's great about the Luxury is that it has several standard components that should impress a lot of people. Its daytime running lamps and headlamps use LEDs, it has aluminum roof rails, it has a power liftgate for convenience, and it has headlamps that can turn on automatically if the road is particularly dark.

Inside the cabin, the Luxury has a dual-zone climate system that allows the front passenger specify his/her desired temperature. The front seats are heated and the steering wheel is wrapped in leather. The remote start function can be fun to use, not to mention useful when people want to warm up or cool down their cabins before they get in.

Things are even nicer in the Premium Luxury trim. It has power-lumbar controls in its front seats, it has a steering wheel that can automatically heat up when the weather is cold, and it has a power-adjustable steering column. Making it simpler to get one's seat into the best position is a memory system. The driver's seat, outside mirrors, and steering column can all be programmed to remember two different positions.

In the back of the Premium Luxury, there's a sliding fence that can be used to secure smaller items. Since it's adjustable, it can accommodate a variety of bags. There's a retractable cargo shade to add some more privacy.

People may be concerned about security as well. In this case, the Premium Luxury is a good choice since it has an alarm system, locking wheel lugs, a locking steering column, and an interior movement sensor.

This brings the discussion to safety. As one would assume, both the Luxury and Premium Luxury are built with all sorts of safety components, such as multiple air bags, traction control, and tire pressure sensors. They have Lane Keep Assist to help them stay centered in their lanes, HD rear vision cameras to make it easier to back up safely, and parking assist functions that can reduce the chances of bumping other objects while parking.

Plus, the XT5 comes standard with forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking. This enables the SUV to warn a driver if he/she is approaching another vehicle, or pedestrian, too quickly. A warning will be issued if an issue is detected, and the vehicle can hit the brakes if necessary.

What the Premium Luxury has that the Luxury doesn't is blind zone monitoring. This model can let drivers know when it's safe to change lanes. The Premium Luxury also has rear cross-traffic monitoring to make sure people don't back up into oncoming vehicles. Adaptive cruise control is available in the Premium Luxury as well.

A discussion of a modern vehicle wouldn't be complete without going over technology. Cadillac has made the Luxury trim attractive with a comprehensive tech package. The Luxury can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot, uses a Bose eight-speaker audio system, offers SiriusXM to expand entertainment options, and has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As part of the "Cadillac user experience", the XT5 has an eight-inch touchscreen that can support certain apps and can recognize natural voice commands.

With the Premium Luxury, wireless charging is standard, and a consumer can upgrade to a Bose audio system with 14 speakers. Other available features include a surround vision camera, a head-up display, and a night vision system that can display a thermal imagine of anything farther than the reach of your headlamps.

Compare the 2021 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury vs Sport Trim. What is the difference?

A key difference is that the Sport comes standard with the V6 engine, while the Premium Luxury gives customers the choice of either the V6 or the four-cylinder. Like the Premium Luxury, the Sport has an available towing package.

Another element that the Sport has is standard all-wheel drive. In the other trims, this is an option, with the standard drivetrain being a front-wheel version. Whereas the Premium Luxury has an available real-time damping suspension, this system is standard on the Sport, just like the performance suspension and heavy-duty cooling system are.

The general feel of the Sport is much more aggressive than that of the Premium Luxury. Going along with this idea, the Sport has 20-inch alloy wheels with a 12-spoke design and pearl nickel finish. Wheels that look even more bold with dark inserts are available. Enhancing the aesthetic of the Sport are gloss black roof rails. These are functional in addition to making the SUV look a little more rugged.

The reality is that the differences between the Premium Luxury and Sport pretty much end there. Inside the cabin of each trim, the amenities are the same, as are the technological components. There's nothing wrong with any of this, but anyone thinking that the Sport might be a little more unique won't find anything special when looking at the interior of the SUV.

Which Trim to Choose?

The previous paragraph may have given readers a sense of whether the more expensive price of the Sport is really warranted. For most people, it isn't. The Sport does have the better suspension system and some higher-end exterior amenities, but it doesn't stand far enough apart from the Premium Luxury to be worth the additional cost.

That leaves the Luxury and the Premium Luxury. To be honest, these trims feel somewhat similar to each other. They have many of the same safety systems and infotainment features, and they have a lot of the same interior amenities.

There is one major difference between the two, and that's the fact that the Premium Luxury can be equipped with the V6 engine. This engine can significantly enhance the driving experience, and it is definitely worth the more expensive price tag.

Having blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert also puts the Premium Luxury ahead of the Luxury. It's amazing that technology allows vehicles to keep an eye on what's going on around them, and most reasonable people would want to be made aware of potential issues. Since it's impossible to see in one's blind spot, it can be very useful to have a monitoring system built into a vehicle. Likewise, rear cross-traffic monitoring provides key information that can prevent accidents. The Premium Luxury can be upgraded with a few more safety components, and this is important, too.

The 2021 Cadillac XT5 is a solid option if anyone is interested in getting a SUV that feels refined. It has a smooth ride, and that ride can be particularly enjoyable if someone opts for the available suspension. In a XT5, people will have nearly everything they're looking for in an SUV. The bottom line is that this model, in particular the Premium Luxury trim, will be able to please many consumers.
