The new 2020 Cadillac XT6 is the company's first third-row crossover. Not quite as big as the truck-sized Escalade and not quite as small as the XT5, the XT6 features a smaller frame with a sedan-based chassis. In the end, it fulfills a purpose for consumers who don't want to spend top dollar on a full-size luxury SUV. Yet, they want the passenger and cargo room a mid-size crossover doesn't provide.
What’s New for 2020?
Everything is new on this first-generation Cadillac XT6. The chassis design comes from the manufacturer's full-sized sedan models. It's interior and exterior features are borrowed from its smaller XT5 sibling.
Available styles and trims
The 2020 Cadillac XT6 comes with two trims -- The Premium Luxury and the Sport. The first trim is available in both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions. The Sport only comes with AWD.
Other than FWD/AWD for the Premium Luxury trim, there are no significant differences. For the Sport, the main upgrades include an enhanced engine cooling system and larger tires.
The XT6's exterior styling
Styling begins with a set of polished 20-inch alloy wheels and a non-toxic colored finish across all exterior surfaces. A hands-free power liftgate increases the consumer's convenience along with heated side-view mirrors. All windows are deeply tinted for cabin privacy. Completing the styling is a standard power sunroof with double-sized glass and a sunshade to prevent overheating.
The interior of the 2020 Cadillac XT6 presents consumers with luxury accessories one would expect from this manufacturer. For instance, a heated steering wheel and personal temperature adjustments. Furthermore, thanks to sensors that continually read climate conditions, airflow is automatically adjusted to eliminate humidity.
Storage-wise, the XT6 contains almost 79 cubic feet of space when the second and third-row seats are completely folded down. While not as voluminous as the truck-sized Escalade, it has plenty of room to store cargo and luggage of various sizes.
Audio features and connectivity are the same across all trims. A Bose eight-speaker audio system emits powerful sound for FM radio stations, satellite radio, and streaming music.
Speaking about streaming, everyone can listen to their favorite songs or watch videos with the XT6's built-in 4G LTE hotspot. When the power on their smart devices goes down, they are able to restore it through wireless charging and six USB ports.
The Premium Luxury FWD and AWD trims also come with Cadillac's user experience package. It features an eight-inch infotainment touch screen with voice recognition technology. In addition to voice commands, the package helps pair mobile devices to the audio system through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Under the hood, all XT6 trims come with a 3.6L V6 engine with Variable Valve Timing (VVT). This is a powertrain enhancement that alters the timing of a valve lift to improve acceleration and fuel economy. Overall, the engine provides an impressive 310 horsepower and a torque of 271 pounds per foot.
The powertrain is partnered with a nine-speed automatic transmission with an Electronic Precision Shift interface for smooth gear transitions. On the AWD versions of the XT6, the driver can switch between standard and sports performance with the push of a button.
Steering control on the Sport trim is maintained through real-time damping suspension that adjusts to road conditions every two milliseconds. Furthermore, a twin clutch is installed to evenly distribute torque between the right and left tires for a smoother ride over rough terrains.
Quality and comfort
The 2020 XT6's comfort starts with acoustically designed windshield with thicker glass. This mutes outside road and engine sounds and creates a quiet ride for the driver and passengers.
Next comes power-adjustable front seats. Both the driver and passenger have eight options to configure their seats to the proper comfort level. In addition, the front seats have two-way lumbar controls to avoid taxing their back muscles.
All trims have extensive safety and driver assist features that come as upgrades for other SUVs. Seven airbags are placed throughout the cabin to cover all occupants. A HD rear vision camera provides clear views of the area directly behind the vehicle to help park and avoid objects. The rear-view mirror automatically dims when it senses bright light from behind.
Another feature is a built-in safety alert in the driver's seat. This warns the consumer about an impending collision through pulses in the seat’s frame. In addition, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 comes with a teen driver configuration. When activated, it can limit vehicle features until the teen buckles their seat belt or locks their door. It also generates an in-vehicle report card with information on driving habits.
Additional safety features include a cross traffic alert that displays warning triangles on the rear camera view. Warning beeps and lights inform the driver if they are veering out of their lane or there's a vehicle in their blind zone. Forward alerts detect imminent collisions with pedestrians or other vehicles.
As standard between FWD and AWD models, there's a difference in fuel economy, although slight, between the trims of the 2020 Cadillac XT6. The FWD trims gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway while AWD efficiency goes down one mile for each.
In the end, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is a good in-between three-row SUV who want comfort and cargo space along with luxury.
Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:
- Example: Base Cadillac XT6 invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
- What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.
Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)
Note: All Cadillac XT6 MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.
A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
