The Arteon is currently Volkswagen’s flagship luxury sedan. It’s nice enough to compete with a few high-end European models, including the BMW 5-Series and the Audi A6. Despite having the lineup’s least expensive price tag, the entry-level Arteon SE R-Line certainly does not seem like a downgrade. It comes loaded with many desirable creature comforts. This trim also offers the same degree of performance.

This year, the Arteon now delivers a more competitive performance. Like every other trim, the Arteon SE R-Line receives an updated turbo four-cylinder engine. It has been revised to squeeze out a more stimulating 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. To promote snappy gear shifts and enhanced responsiveness, VW also installed a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Fuel economy has climbed to 24 mpg town/34 mpg freeway on premium gasoline.

It’s important to note that the SE R-Line trim is only available with a front-wheel-drive layout. While traction won’t be as good when traveling on a snow-filled street, drivers should not have any issues in the rain. Folks who need the automaker’s 4MOTION AWD system must step up to one of the higher trim levels.

In terms of handling, the Arteon SE R-Line maneuvers just as well as the other trims. It comes standard with an adaptive suspension system, which is typically a feature that demands extra money. Drivers can select from two settings: Comfort+ and Sport+. While the Comfort+ setting softens the car’s ride, switching to the Sport+ settings stiffens the electronic dampers for sharper handling.

Drive Mode Select also comes standard. This system allows you to adjust the responsiveness of the steering system and transmission. When comparing the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon SE R-Line to the other trims, shoppers won’t notice any major styling differences. It looks just as sleek and elegant. While stunning LED headlights bolster the car’s front-end styling, LED taillights and wide exhaust ports dress up the rear fascia. Volkswagen offers the SE R-Line trim in five colors: Deep Black Pearl, Oryx White, Kings Red Metallic, Lapiz Blue Metallic, and Moonstone Gray.

This year, Volkswagen has enhanced the car’s curb appeal by equipping it with a standard R-Line appearance package. It now has a more aggressive character. A cool-looking set of 18-inch alloy wheels are on the car’s list of standard equipment. Power-adjustable heated side mirrors help ensure good visibility on cold days.

Passengers can expect the SE R-Line trim to offer great cabin comfort. Its 12-way power front seats feature power lumbar support and built-in heating modes. The seats are wrapped in leatherette upholstery. With the use of tri-zone automatic climate control, front and rear passengers can select their preferred cabin temperature.

Another nice amenity is the sedan’s leather-covered performance steering wheel, which provides tilt and telescoping functions. Stainless steel pedal caps and paddle shifters give the car’s cockpit an even sportier nature.

VW’s MIB3 Discover Media infotainment system comes loaded with all of today’s most desirable multimedia features. Volkswagen even designed the infotainment system with navigation, which provides real-time traffic and road construction updates. A backup camera, pedestrian detection, and parking sensors also come standard.

For an extra $4,600 or so, buyers can step up to the mid-level Arteon SEL R-Line. While this trim doesn’t add any more performance, it does offer a greater sense of luxury.

At first glance, the SEL R-Line trim looks quite similar to the SE R-Line trim. However, there are some differences. While larger 19-inch wheels bring a more muscular stance, a cool light bar spans the lower grille. Power-folding side mirrors also come equipped on the SEL R-Line.

Upon slipping behind the wheel of the Arteon SEL R-Line, drivers will notice its more luxurious accommodations. Nappa leather upholstery makes the cabin feel more high-end. A panoramic sunroof enables passengers to look up at the sky. To give the interior a more relaxed feel, VW also adds a 30-color ambient interior lighting system.

Some highly beneficial safety technologies are equipped on the Arteon SEL R-Line. When traveling at night, the sedan’s steering-responsive headlamps and cornering fog lights help drivers to obtain a better view of the road.

VW’s semi-autonomous IQ Drive system is an especially advanced cruise control system. Not only does this system feature lane-centering technology, but it can also monitor for obstacles and adjust the car’s speed as needed. Active Blind Spot Assist is integrated into the system, which helps prevent drivers from making unsafe lane changes.

Drivers who happen to experience a medical emergency while on the road will be thankful for Emergency Assist. This system can automatically guide the sedan and bring it to a halt. Road sign recognition is another one of the SEL R-Line trim’s upgrades. Aside from making drivers aware of traffic warning signs, it also helps them to avoid exceeding the posted speed limit.

Buyers who live in snow-prone states may consider the SEL R-Line trim’s standard 4MOTION AWD system to be a necessity. It seamlessly adapts to slippery road conditions. The only downside is the AWD-equipped Arteon’s lower fuel economy rating. According to the federal government’s calculations, drivers can expect to get around 22 mpg in urban areas and 30 mpg on the freeway.

Buyers won’t find many features on the Arteon SEL R-Line’s list of options. However, VW does offer an optional set of 20-inch Dark Graphite wheels.

Compare the SEL R-Line vs SEL Premium R-Line Trims. What is the difference?

Sitting atop the range is the Arteon SEL Premium R-Line. It comes loaded with a greater number of high-end features. This is a great alternative to a pricier European luxy sedan.

While ventilated front seats allow you to experience increased comfort on summer days, a heated steering wheel makes winter commutes more relaxing. No other Arteon trim receives a driver’s seat massage function, which can further lower stress levels when traveling. Other upgrades include a heated steering wheel and a foot-activated power hatch.

The SEL Premium R-Line trim also makes life a bit more comfortable for passengers sitting in the back. It adds heated outboard rear seats and rear climate controls. Integrated into the rear console is a USB-C charge port.

When listening to the SEL Premium R-Line trim’s 700-watt Harman Kardon audio system, music fans will enjoy a more stunning soundtrack. It places a total of 12 high-end speakers throughout the cabin.

While behind the wheel of this top-of-the-line model, parking will be less of a challenge. VW’s automated parking system can handle the task of steering the sedan into spaces. An overhead camera system also gives drivers optimum visibility when maneuvering in tight places.

Expect the SEL Premium R-Line trim to look much like the mid-level SEL R-Line trim. However, it comes standard with larger 20-inch wheels. No options are offered.

Which Trim to Choose?

It’s easy to recommend the entry-level Arteon SE R-Line. It offers quite a bit of luxury for the money. Like the rest of the lineup, the SE R-Line trim benefits from a much-improved powertrain. Drivers will also appreciate the car’s newly standard R-Line package, which brings sportier interior and exterior touches. Even some of the Arteon’s more expensive counterparts charge extra for its standard adaptive suspension system.

When viewing the Arteon SE R-Line list of standard equipment, buyers won’t feel as if they’re making any compromises. Just a few of this trim’s high-tech features include a customizable Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster, a modern touchscreen interface with wireless smartphone connectivity, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Key safety features, such as blind-spot sensing and automatic emergency braking, are also standard.

Some buyers will find the leather-appointed SEL R-Line trim to be worth the extra money. It adds VW’s excellent IQ.Drive safety system. Other perks include adaptive LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and optional 20-inch Dark Graphite wheels.

Drivers who desire Audi-like luxury will want the range-topping Arteon SEL Premium R-Line. It’s packed with high-end amenities, such as a driver’s seat massage function and a Harman Kardon premium sound system. An overhead camera system and an automated parking system also enable drivers to experience less stress. If cost isn’t a factor, the Arteon SEL Premium R-Line is the way to go.
