There are so many SUVs on the market that it can be difficult to keep them all straight. Still, the Kia Sportage has managed to make a name for itself by offering excellent value and impressive practicality. Currently, it is in its fourth generation, which launched all of the way back in 2017. The Sportage continues to be a well-rounded option for those hunting a new SUV.

What's New for 2022?

Last year's S model is no longer available for the 2022 Kia Sportage. The Nightfall Edition, which was previously just an appearance package, is now its own trim level. For the EX trim level, a panoramic sunroof is now part of the standard equipment. The entry-level LX now has more features in its available package, including heated front seats and a push-button start.

Performance Stats

Most models of the 2022 Sportage are relying on a 2.4L four-cylinder engine to move around town. It produces 181-horsepower. For the top SX Turbo model, Kia instead gives the Sportage a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that will produce 240-horsepower. Both of these engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and both can pair with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive on any of the trim levels.

Fuel Economy

Sticking with the base engine and front-wheel drive will allow the Sportage to get 23mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway. While these numbers are not necessarily bad, there are several rivals that do better. Upgrading to all-wheel drive means the fuel efficiency drops to 22mpg city and 26mpg highway with the base engine.

Of course, the turbocharged engine burns more fuel. With front-wheel drive, the SX Turbo gets 20mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway. Going up to all-wheel drive will mean going down to 19mpg city and 24mpg highway.

Safety Features

It can be argued that what the 2022 Sportage lacks in its efficiency is more than made up for by its numerous safety features. All models are equipped with forward-collision mitigation with pedestrian detection and a driver attention monitor. Lane-keeping assist and lane departure warning are both included as well. The entire line also has automatic high beams.

The brand-new Night Edition is the first to add blind-spot monitoring, while the EX makes adaptive cruise control and both front and rear parking sensors available. Those features become standard for the top SX Turbo trim.

Technology Features

Kia understands that the way to the modern driver's heart is often technology. An 8-inch touchscreen is included for the base LX model, which is also home to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Voice recognition is also standard so that drivers can keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

A six-speaker sound system is standard for the LX, but other 2022 Sportage models come with an eight-speaker setup instead. On the topic of available tech upgrades, buyers can find wireless device charging, navigation, and satellite radio as well. Only one USB port comes standard, but upper trims add a second one for back passengers.

Driving Dynamics

Despite its name, the Sportage does not have a very athletic ride. Instead, this SUV would best be described as comfortable. There is enough steering feedback and stopping power for drivers to feel confident at the wheel. If a burst of acceleration is really important to buyers, they will want to stick with the SX Turbo model. The design of the Sportage also gives it excellent forward and rear visibility, which is another major perk for drivers.

Interior Quality & Design

Although Kia is not a luxury brand, the interior of the Sportage is quite upscale. High-quality materials are used throughout, and the few plastics found in the cabin do not take away from the overall look. While the entry-level LX has cloth upholstery, the Nightfall Edition quickly swaps that out with synthetic leather instead. Genuine leather upholstery is available for the EX and standard on the SX turbo.

Moving beyond the seating surfaces, the 2022 Sportage has a power-adjustable driver's seat on the Nightfall Edition and higher. These same models have leather-wrapped steering wheels and shift knobs. Dual-zone automatic climate control becomes standard for the EX, which also has an available package that will add climate-controlled front seats, wireless device charging, and power adjustment for the front passenger.

Interior Space

Passengers should have few complaints about the amount of room they have in either row of the Sportage. The cargo space is smaller than some competitors, however, with just 30.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 60 behind the first. That said, the back opening is nice and wide, and an adjustable cargo floor is standard on all models. Buyers can also opt for a model with a power liftgate to make loading this SUV easier.
