Kia is a brand that has become a family favorite. Their SUV lineup is strong, offering a variety of styles and sizes. The 2021 Kia Sportage is a compact SUV with a smooth ride and attractive appearance, inside and out. Although it is still in its fourth generation, which debuted back in 2017, the Sportage manages to stay fresh by offering two new appearance packages in 2021. They are known as the Nightfall and Nightfall Premium and they both add a variety of blacked-out exterior features to the S trim level.
The majority of the Sportage lineup relies on a 2.4L four-cylinder engine for power. It can pump out 181-horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This is plenty of power for a vehicle of this size to move around quickly. A six-speed automatic transmission is also found under the hood of the Sportage.
For a more athletic ride, buyers can also check out the SX Turbo model. It is the only version of the Sportage available with a turbo 2.0L four-cylinder that churns out 240-horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This model also has a fun sport-tuned suspension. Like the standard engine, it is paired with a six-speed automatic.
There are both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive versions of the Sportage with either of the available powertrains. The standard engine with FWD will have drivers seeing 23mpg city and 30mpg highway. Choosing to make the jump up to all-wheel drive will mean getting 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
It is no surprise that the much more powerful turbo engine does not do quite as well as the standard option. When equipped with front-wheel drive, it is EPA-estimated to get 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. All-wheel-drive models do a little worse, only getting 19mpg city and 24mpg highway.
Kia offers the Sportage in four trim levels. Buyers will have to choose between the LX, S, EX, and SX Turbo models. The entry-level LX represents a great value, coming with things like LED daytime running lights and alloy wheels.
For the S trim, fog lamps are added and the wheel size jumps up from 17-inches to 18-inches. The outside also gets heated side mirrors and handy roof rails for extra cargo space. For the EX, Kia adds solar glass and keyless entry and ignition. This is also the first model that adds the always-popular hands-free power liftgate.
The SX Turbo has more than just power going for it. It has a full suite of LED lighting, both inside and out. A panoramic sunroof and eye-catching 19-inch alloy wheels are also standard.
The attention to detail is immediately apparent when sitting inside of the 2021 Sportage. Although the LX sticks with cloth for its upholstery, the S gets simulated leather. For genuine leather, buyers can go with the SX Turbo. The EX trim level is ready for any weather that gets thrown at it with its heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. The SX Turbo has basically every comfort-enhancing feature out there, including ventilated and power-adjustable front seats.
Kia knows that families are more interested in cutting-edge driver assistance features than ever before. That is why buyers will find that the Sportage is fully-loaded. All four of the available trim levels come with forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Another thing the trims all have in common is a driver attention monitor, which pays attention to the driver's normal patterns and alerts them when it detects drowsy or distracted behavior.
Front and rear parking sensors are standard for the SX Turbo. These can be added to the EX trim as well, but only if drivers add the Technology package. Also included in the package is adaptive cruise control. The package further adds many of the high-end features found on the SX Turbo, such as the leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
No matter how a driver uses their Sportage, they can benefit from the numerous standard technology features. An 8-inch touchscreen can be found in all trims. Drivers can use Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto to sync their Sportage with their compatible smartphone. All models include at least one USB port, while the EX and SX Turbo also add one for the backseat. The SX Turbo gets navigation and wireless device charging. Those two high-end features are also found in the EX's Technology package.
