What 2022 Ford Expedition Trim Should You Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

The 2022 Ford Expedition is a large SUV with three rows of seats. It can accommodate between five to eight people, depending on the model. The entire cabin is massive with plenty of headroom and legroom for everyone to ride comfortably. There's also an available 104.6 cubic-feet of cargo space in this beast. The Expedition has decent off-road capabilities and can even tow up to 9,300 pounds.

There are a total of 10 trim levels for the 2022 Ford Expedition. The standard engine is a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 with twin turbochargers. This power-plant makes 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The stock powertrain also gets a 10-speed automatic transmission. Most of the trim levels are available in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variations.

The Expedition has an EPA-estimated fuel-economy rating of 17 miles-per-gallon in the city and 23 miles-per-gallon on the highway. This will vary slightly depending on the trim. It will also be a bit lower on all-wheel drive models. Here's a rundown of all major differences between the 10 trim levels.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition XL STX vs XLT Trims. What is the difference?

The first trim level for the Ford Expedition is called the XL STX. It comes with the aforementioned stock motor and transmission system. Every model of the Expedition gets Ford Co-Pilot360™ Technology. This is a whole suite of driver-assists and other high-tech features. The number of features varies depending on the trim level.

The base model offers Auto Start/Stop Technology for better fuel efficiency. There's Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control for better handling and a safer ride. The XL STX also has Ford's Blind-Spot Information System. This technology even monitors rear cross-traffic. Some of the remaining Co-Pilot360™ features for this trim include a rear-view camera, Pre-Collision Assist and a Lane-Keeping system.

The next trim level up from the base model is called the XLT. This model also has the Co-Pilot360™ Technology, but adds a few more features. It offers Lane-Centering Assist, Trailer-Backup Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control with a special start-and-stop feature. Both trim levels have an AM/FM stereo with a six-speaker sound system. The XLT trim adds compatibility for SiriusXM Radio.

Both trims have Ford's SYNC 4 Infotainment System with a 12-inch touchscreen. There's also a separate 8-inch productivity screen located in the gauge cluster. The infotainment system has Bluetooth and Voice-Command for music streaming and hands-free operation of certain features. There are Smart-Charging USB ports. The XLT gets extra USB ports and the option for wireless charging for smartphones and other devices.

Every trim level offers power locks and windows. These two trims get an 8-way power driver's seat and a 4-way manual seat for the front passenger. The XLT has three rows of seats while the XL STX only has two. The XL STX can accommodate five people, while the XLT can seat eight. Both of these trims have Tri-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control and an air filter for the cabin.

Not only does the XLT have more seats, but it has more ways to entertain the backseat passengers too. A rear-seat entertainment system is available, complete with screens on the headrests. Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition XLT vs XLT Max Trims. What Is the Difference?

After the Ford Expedition XLT comes the XLT Max. As exciting as that name sounds, there's not a whole lot to say about this trim level. It has the same engine, transmission and mechanical features as the XLT. All of the performance specs are the same. Every single exterior, interior, convenience and safety feature is the same when comparing these two trim levels.

The difference here is that the Max version of the XLT is simply bigger. A Max model is an extended version of whatever trim it is named after. In this case, it's a longer version of the XLT. The extra length doesn't change the seating or passenger space too much, it's more about extra storage space behind the third row of seats.

The Expedition XLT Max has an overall length of 221.9 inches. The wheelbase is 131.6 inches. The regular XLT is 210-inches long with a wheelbase of 122.5 inches. These measurements hold true for every Max version of the various trim levels.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition XLT Max vs Limited Trim. What Is the Difference?

The next trim level up is called the Limited. It comes with a large increase in power. This is due to the available high-output version of the 3.5-liter, turbocharged EcoBoost engine. This supped up version of the V-6 engine makes 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. This setup still gets the standard 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Limited has a few new options like the Active Park Assist 2.0 System. This system helps with all forms of parking, including parallel parking and reverse perpendicular parking. Buyers can also add on Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ 2.0 and a 360-degree camera system.

The infotainment system can be upgraded to Ford's SYNC 4A model with a built-in navigation system. This comes with a giant 15.3-inch display. There are two choices for an upgraded audio system by Bang & Olufsen®. One comes with 12 speakers while the second version has a total of 22 speakers. Both feature a subwoofer for amazing bass sounds.

The Limited models have 20-inch Bright-machined aluminum wheels and all-season tires. The front seats are upgraded to captain's chairs with perforated-leather trim. These also have heating and ventilation to keep occupants comfortable in any weather. The driver's seat has 10-way power adjustments and the front passenger will enjoy 8-way power adjustments.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition Limited vs Limited Max. What is the difference?

This is the same deal as the XLT versus the XLT Max. All of the performance specs and features are the same when comparing these two models. The Limited Max is simply an extended version of the Limited, which adds some more cargo room in the back.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition Limited Max vs Timberline Trim Level. What Is the Difference?

The Timberline model of the 2022 Ford Expedition comes with yet another power increase. It's once again the same engine, just fine-tuned for a higher power output. This time, the turbocharged V-6 cranks out 440 horses and 510 pound-feet of torque. The Timberline also has a heavy-duty radiator and some skid plates on 4X4 models.

This model of the Expedition once again has a 10-speed automatic transmission. It gets an upgraded Rough Road Suspension. This includes premium off-road shocks, some fine tuning and a higher ground clearance. This trim level also has Intelligent 4WD with Ford's Terrain Management System. This technology allows the driver to choose from seven different driving modes for various road and terrain conditions.

The Timberline has 18-inch wheels with a laser-etched logo. These come painted in Ebony and are outfitted with a set of all-terrain tires. The seats are the same when comparing these two trim levels. They also share the same infotainment systems with the same option to upgrade the audio setup. The driver-assist tech and safety features stay mostly the same as well.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline vs King Ranch Trims. What Is the Difference?

The King Ranch comes equipped with the base engine and transmission system. It gets its own unique suspension system. Ford calls this their CCD Suspension. It works to mitigate every pothole and bump in the road. While the Timberline suspension was engineered for better off-road performance, the King Ranch suspension was designed for a smooth ride over paved roads.

The King Ranch gets the upgraded SYNC 4A Infotainment System and the 22-speaker audio system by Bang & Olufsen® by default. There's a wireless charging pad and the rear-seat entertainment system is included for this trim level. The King Ranch also gets a bigger 12.4-inch productivity screen for the gauge cluster.

Previously optional features like the Blind-Spot Information System and Pre-Collision Assist get added on automatically for this trim level. The King Ranch gets floor liners with carpeted mats for every row. The upholstery gets upgraded to fine Del Rio Leather. The King Ranch also offers LED fog lamps and a panoramic moon-roof. It has 22-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with a 6-spoke design and a set of all-season tires.

Once again, there's not much to add here. The King Ranch Max is a longer version of the King Ranch. It's approximately 11.9-inches longer with some extra space for whatever stuff the driver needs to haul around.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition King Ranch Max vs Platinum Trim Level. What Is the Difference?

The Platinum trim has the same standard powertrain as the King Ranch Max. There are no real differences in power, handling and performance between these two trim levels. The Platinum trim gets all of the Ford Co-Pilot360™ Technology features, the upgraded infotainment system and the 22-speaker audio system. The Platinum also has similar 22-inch wheels when compared to the King Ranch Max. These are paired with all-season tires.

The Platinum has multi-contour seats with Active Motion. This provides lumbar support as well as a massage feature. There's a heating feature for the front seats and for the second row. All of the seats are covered with leather-trimmed upholstery. The safety and security features of the King Ranch Max all get carried over to the Platinum model. The driver-assist features are the same with these trim levels too.

For the exterior, the Platinum models come with power-deployed running boards. These are painted to match the body color, with some stainless-steel accents. The Platinum has unique satin-aluminum mirror caps. There are satin-aluminum door handles, trim and an insert for the front grille.

Compare the 2022 Ford Expedition Platinum vs Platinum Max. What is the difference?

Last, but not least, comes the Platinum Max. The reader should know the drill by now. This is just a bigger Platinum model of the 2022 Ford Expedition. It has all of the features of a Platinum. It can do what a Platinum does. It's about a foot longer.

Which Trim to Choose?

The 2022 Ford Expedition is a fantastic full-sized SUV. It's an excellent choice for anyone looking for massive amounts of passenger room and cargo space. Every trim level is well equipped with plenty of convenience and safety features. The top trim levels are downright luxurious. For most buyers, however, the XLT trim will offer the best value.
