The 2022 Ford Expedition has been around for awhile, and it's found a lot of success because of its power and size. It has impressive capabilities and comes in a few trim that are suited for particularly challenging conditions. At the same time, it feels upscale, and it has a price that reflects this.
Power, Performance, and Capability
Under the hood of every Ford Expedition, there's a twin-turbocharged V6. This engine has been matched with a ten-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, and it's a 3.5-liter version that might not be as big as some other engines but is still strong. On most trims, it makes 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. On the Limited trim, it's able to make 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The high-output version that's used on the Timberline trim and the Limited with the Stealth Performance package does even better. It provides 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.
Towing capacity is 9,300 pounds when the SUV is outfitted with all the right equipment. To assist with towing, there's an available program called Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0. It takes care of steering when the Expedition is trying to back up, and there are several available camera views that can let the driver keep an eye on how the trailer is doing.
4WD is available, and so is a Terrain Management System. Through this system, there are options for various drive modes, such Grass/Grave/Snow, Sand, and Mud/Ruts. There's an enhanced 4x4 system that's available, and it comes with a Control Trac program and an electronic limited-slip differential. It can lock the rear axle in order to optimize traction; this may be useful in rugged areas.
The Timberline trim that was already mentioned is a brand new option for the 2022 model year. It has ground clearance of 10.6 inches, which is higher than that of the others in the lineup. It has a modified, specially tuned suspension with premium off-road shocks. It also has Ford Trail Control, a program that assists with braking and throttle while the driver focuses on navigating around uneven terrain and around obstacles. Yet another one of its program is Trail Turn Assist, which helps the SUV take tight turns in less-than-ideal conditions.
Even if the Expedition is not set up with all of these advanced components, it still has a nice, smooth ride. This is thanks to an independent front and rear suspension.
This model can seat up to eight people if it has a bench seat in its middle row. If it has a pair of captain's chairs instead, its total seating capacity would be seven. Second-row leg room is almost 42 inches, making this row feel very spacious. In the third row, there's about 36 inches of leg room. This is still enough space that allows adults to sit in the back.
The front row can be heated and ventilated, and so can the second row. Every trim has a power-adjustable driver's seat, and many have driver's seats that have a memory function. The front seats are even available with a massage function. Cloth, ActiveX (a synthetic leather), and leather are the choices for seating upholstery.
Of course, as an SUV, the Expedition has seats that can fold down easily. Some models have seats that even have a power-folding function. Lowering the rear seats would increase cargo capacity from 20.9 cubic feet to 63.6 cubic feet. If all the rear seats have been folded down, there would be 104.6 cubic feet of cargo space.
Note that there's a larger version of the Expedition called the Expedition MAX. It's about one foot longer than its counterpart, so it has approximately 17 more cubic feet of cargo space.
All trims have at least a 12-inch center stack screen with smartphone compatibility. Plus, they have multiple USB charging ports and can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot through which up to ten devices can connect to the internet at once. Higher trims have 15.5-inch touchscreens as well as 12.4-inch digital instrument clusters. Wireless charging is found on many Expedition models, too.
Some get to have rear-seat entertainment systems. These systems provide rear-seat passengers with two screens, mounted on the headrests of the front seats. Up to eight USB ports are available so that everyone's device can stay fully charged for the duration of a trip.
The industry has come a long way in terms of integrating technology into automotive safety systems. New for this year is an available program called Ford BlueCruise. It uses adaptive cruise control, speed sign recognition, and lane centering technologies to offer a hands-free driving experience. It can be used on certain highways, and it will only work if the driver's eyes are focused on the road.
Other high-tech safety features include an intersection assist program in which the Expedition can sense cars approaching it while it's turning, pre-collision assist with emergency braking, reverse automatic braking, and active park assist. This last program is so useful when the Ford has to make its way into a tight parking space. It handles the steering, shifting, braking, and accelerating.
The options seem to be quite impressive with the Ford Expedition. Its most basic version has so much space and capability to offer, and the higher trims feel sophisticated with advanced technology and premium amenities.
