Consider for a moment what you expect out of a three-row crossover SUV. Whatever you imagined, the 2019 Ford Expedition likely blows it out of the water. It can carry up to eight adult passengers and has the towing capacity of a big truck. Even though it's massive, there isn't another vehicle that quite matches Ford's versatile Expedition.
Each of the three trims has several options available, so the 2019 Ford Expedition can suit all kinds of drivers. If you want the basics, you can grab the XLT with confidence. If you want the features, then grab the Platinum trim, whose bonuses match those found on luxury SUVs. The inside is massive and attractive, and you won't hear a whisper on the highway.
With a powerful V6 turbo engine, the Expedition has the vigor to propel itself to one of the class' fastest. It also comes with a 10-speed auto transmission to take full advantage of the engine and to assist with fuel economy. You won't get the most out of the engine with standard fuel though; you need premium.
If you don't intend to tow much, then other three-row crossovers will suit your needs. Outside of that, it's hard to beat the Expedition by Ford. It's refined, versatile, and burly.
There aren't many changes for the 2019 Ford Expedition, which is part of the fourth generation from last year. The most significant difference is the addition of the Stealth Edition package.
Unless you're dying for the wood-grain interior of the three-row crossover Expedition, it's worth keeping your search to the XLT or the Limited.
With the optional 202A package, the base trim has everything you need for long-haul comfort and in-city driving. You get a few nice luxury upgrades if you opt for the Limited though, such as a superior sound system and heated second-row seats.
The motoring of the Platinum is definitely exciting, but the bottom two tiers have a better overall value. If you're worried about cargo space, all trims can get a long wheelbase.
There are three trim choices for the 2019 Ford Expedition: the XLT, the Limited, and the Platinum.
At the base trim, you get a 3.5L V6 turbo engine along with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. It comes with a 10-speed auto transmission and can produce 375 horses. Some standard features include push-button ignition, air conditioning, rook rack rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
On the XLT, you get access to the 201A and 202A packages. In the first, you get power adjustments to the front passenger seat and simulated leather in the first two rows. The second package offers a much more generous list of features, including dual zone auto climate control and rear cross-traffic alert.
If you're looking for off-roading, you can grab the FX4 4x4 Off-Road package. Here, you get skid plates, a 3.73 limited-slip rear axle, and all-terrain tires, plus more.
Moving up to the 2019 Ford Expedition Limited trim will get you all the features from the 202A package, plus heated second-row seats and front parking sensors. Also, you get a serious stereo upgrade: a 12-speaker premium B&O Play setup.
Finally, you can opt for the top-tier Platinum tier, which contains the features from a 302A-packaged Limited. Also, you get active noise cancellation, interior wood accents, and better leather for your steering wheel. The Platinum also performs better if you use 93 octane fuel, upping the horses to 400 and the torque to 480 pound-feet.
Given the massive size of the 2019 Ford Expedition, it's reasonable to believe that it can't possibly be a fast SUV -- but you'd be wrong. Unfortunately, the brakes don't meet the same par as the tires don't grip well. Despite this, the handling is good for the Expedition's class.
There's no denying how fun it is to drive as fast as the Expedition lets you, especially when your passengers didn't think it could. In testing, though, it takes a hair under 7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a complete stop.
It would be nicer is the brake pedals didn't need as much of a push to use, especially for in-city driving. If you're stopping in an emergency, you might actually believe for a moment that you won't stop. Still, the Expedition stays stable and consistent, and it takes 133 feet to come to a stop from 60. For the class, this is an average value.
There's hardly any feedback, and the steering is slow. Though you won't struggle to drive straight in the 2019 Ford Expedition, it's lazy to return the steering wheel to center. Plus, it's a laughably large wheel that makes you feel like you're driving a full-size truck.
Given the problems with brakes, body roll, and steering, it's recommended to be conservative behind the wheel. If you're confident and experienced with the body sway, though, you can get to your destination much quicker than you initially thought.
As far as off-road conditions go, you can quickly shift to four-wheel drive on the fly. With nearly 10 inches of ground clearance, you'll be good to go on many rocky roads. Don't forget the size of the SUV you're in, though, when going over ruts.
