This car is available with all-wheel drive, but not all trims offer this option. The S, which is the first in the lineup, is only available with front-wheel drive. The SV gives customers the option of getting front-wheel or all-wheel drive; this is a choice that drivers in colder climates will appreciate.

Both the S and SV use 2.5-liter engines. One of these engines can crank out 188 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. It's nice that even the S has push-button start and an intelligent key system, along with remote engine start.

From the exterior, the two cars look very similar. However, the S sits on 16-inch steel wheels while the SV has 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The interiors of these trims differ slightly, with the SV offering the more upscale experience. With the S, drivers get to use a seven-inch touchscreens. On the SV, that touchscreen is bigger, measuring eight inches. Either way, there would be voice recognition, Bluetooth, six speakers, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. A notable distinction is that only the SV comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, it has SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

When it comes to safety, the Altima has the more comprehensive package. It has active ride control and intelligent trace control, both of which are not available on the entry-level trim. The SV has been equipped with blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, a rear sonar system, and rear automatic braking. These components are optional, but not standard, on the S. One of the biggest upgrades to the SR is its sport-tuned suspension. This is a little firmer than a typical suspension, and as a result, handling feels sharper and body roll is reduced. Another noticeable change is that the SR has paddle shifters and a manual shift mode.

The SR has a few different exterior elements than the SV has. Dual chrome exhaust finishers, a dark chrome V-motion grille, and a charcoal rear diffuser contribute to its athletic appearance. Unlike the SV, which has chrome door handles, the SR has body-color ones. The SR has 19-inch wheels instead of 17-inch ones, and it's available with LED fog lights.

Sport cloth seats enhance the athletic feel of the SR. It has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and its interior trim has a carbon-fiber look.

Compare the SR vs SR Midnight Edition. What is the difference?

Think of the SR Midnight Edition as a sort of appearance package for the SR. Mechanically, it's no different from the SR. It, too, has paddle shifters so that drivers can have a bit of fun and take control over shifting whenever they'd like to. There's a price difference of a little less than $2,000 when moving from the SR to the Midnight Edition.

Both the SR and SR Midnight Edition has 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. However, the ones on the Midnight Edition have a black-painted machine finish. Plus, it has LED fog lights so that it can stand out even more. Those fog lights are an option on the SR.

Further, the SR Midnight Edition gets upgraded with heated side mirrors that have LED turn signal indicators built into them, and it has a power sliding glass moonroof. The moonroof is sure to be noticed by prospective buyers, as it's generally thought of as a luxurious feature. The SR Midnight Edition, has a black rear spoiler and special black badging.

A few more enhancements have been made to the inside of the trim as well. It treats the driver and front passenger to heated seats, and it has power lumbar support for the driver's seat.

Unlike the SR trims, the SL does not have paddle shifters or a sport-tuned suspension. It does, though, have an electronic parking brake. On the SL, the wheels go back down to measuring 17 inches instead of 19 inches.

The SL doesn't have the black accents that are found all over the Midnight Edition. Rather, it has body-color outside mirrors, chrome door handles, a chrome V-Motion grille, and a body-color rear diffuser. It still gets to have dual chrome exhaust finishers, and like the Midnight Edition, it has a power moonroof.

There are more things in place on the SL that can keep passengers comfortable. While the lower trims all have manual temperature control systems, the SL has a dual-zone automatic climate control system. It has rear air-conditioning vents so that everyone can enjoy the cool air on a hot summer day, and for the winter, the SL's heated steering wheel will come in handy.

Not only can the SL be remotely started, but that remote start function also comes with intelligent climate control. The car can cool down or heat up, depending on the season, before people enter the cabin.

Seats on the SL have been upgraded with leather upholstery. This is a major distinction and a feature that some buyers are specifically looking for. The wood-tone trim around the dash contributes to the more refined look of this trim.

Other huge perks that are associated with the SL have to do with its infotainment system. At this level, navigation and SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link become standard. When navigation is integrated into the touchscreen, it's easy to input a destination and then follow along with turn-by-turn directions. The SL features a Bose premium audio system that has nine speakers, which is three more speakers than what the standard sound system includes.

The SL can be set up with NissanConnect Services. This technology allows someone to use an app on a mobile device to perform tasks like pinpoint the Altima's location, lock or unlock the doors, and check on vehicle diagnostics.

More driver-assist technologies are found on the SL than on the SR Midnight Edition. For instance, it has traffic sign recognition so that it can remind drivers of traffic patterns or changing speed limits. It comes standard with intelligent lane intervention, which is not available with the SR Midnight Edition nor the SR. Finally, it has ProPILOT Assist, an adaptive cruise control system that allows the Nissan to adjust its speed if the speed of other vehicles on the road has changed.

Compare the SL vs SR VC-Turbo. What is the difference?

As its name suggests, the SR VC-Turbo uses a turbo engine. It's the only one in the Altima lineup that uses a 2.0-liter turbo engine.

Remember that the other trims can make 182 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Well, the SR VC-Turbo can generate up to 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It's limited to having front-wheel drive, and like the other SR trims, it has paddle shifters, a sport-tuned suspension, and 19-inch wheels.

The SR VC-Turbo, though, does not have LED fog lights like the SL has. It goes back to having manual climate control, and it doesn't have rear vents or a heated steering wheel. It has sport cloth seats instead of leather ones. Active noise cancellation is part of the SR VC-Turbo's package, and this can cancel out engine noise to make the ride more epeacful.

Basically, the SR VC-Turbo is more expensive than the SL is because of its enhanced engine. The difference is about $1,000. Customers will have to consider whether that extra capability is worth the extra cost. If it is and they go with the SR VC-Turbo, unfortunately this means that will be sacrificing navigation, a premium sound system, NissanConnect Services, traffic sign recognition, intelligent lane intervention, and adaptive cruise control.

Sitting at the top of the lineup, the Platinum is only offered with all-wheel drive. It has the same 2.5-liter engine as the lower trims have. It has an electronic parking brake, but it doesn't have paddle shifters or an enhanced suspension. It does have 19-inch wheels like the SR trims and the turbo version of the Altima.

LED fog lights are found on the Platinum, and inside its cabin, it has the nicest features out of the bunch. It comes with a four-way power-adjustable front-passenger's seat as well as a memory system for the driver's seat and side mirrors. Like some of the other upscale Altima trims, the Platinum has rear vents and dual-zone climate control. It's the only trim to have interior accent lighting and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink transceiver.

In many ways, the Platinum is more like the SL than the SR VC-Turbo. This is because it has pretty much the same driver-assist systems and high-tech components as the SL. Having navigation and adaptive cruise control helps it attract attention. The Platinum is the only trim that has an intelligent around view monitor.
