What 2022 Toyota 4Runner Trim Should You Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

The Toyota 4Runner has been around for a long time. It's an athletic SUV that looks like it's ready to conquer any obstacle that it comes across. While it has plenty of rugged elements, it also has high-end interior features. This model should make a lot of customers happy with what it can do, but first, they have to choose the right trim.


Compare the 2022 Toyota 4Runner SR5 vs TRD Sport Trims. What is the difference?

There aren't too many mechanical differences between these two trims. They both use five-speed electrically controlled automatic transmissions, and they have four-liter V6 engines that can deliver 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. However, the TRD Sport has an X-REAS sport enhancement suspension that can do a better job in rugged conditions.

A big distinction is that the SR5 is available with a third row of seats. The TRD Sport, on the other hand, is only available with two rows. When the SR5 has the extra row, it can fit up to seven total people. This is going to be an intriguing option for many customers. While the third row isn't exactly large, offering a bit less than 30 inches of leg room, it can be useful when a few extra people need to be transported.

There are a few other ways in which the cabin of the TRD Sport looks different from that of the SR5. It has SofTex upholstery rather than fabric, and it has TRD Sport carpet floor mats and a TRD shift knob. Both trims have leather-wrapped steering wheels, overhead and center consoles, and manual climate control. The driver's seats in these trims are power-adjustable in eight ways and offer power lumbar support.

On the outside of the TRD Sport, there are several more enhancements. It has a color-keyed TRD hood scoop, and it has special badging and 20-inch wheels. The SR5 only has 17-inch wheels. Both trims look modern with LEDs in their headlights, high beams, and fog lights.

In terms of technology and safety, there really isn't any difference between these two. They have eight-inch touchscreens with smartphone compatibility, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM, and Wi-Fi capability is available. If someone chooses to upgrade, the SR5 and TRD Sport can come with navigation and advanced voice recognition.

The SR5 and TRD Sport have a good set of driver-assist systems as part of Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). This package includes pre-collision braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The SR5 has the LATCH system in the second row that can work with child seats. On the TRD Sport, but not the SR5, there's the opportunity to get blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring.

Compare the 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport vs Trail Special Edition. What is the difference?

As its name implies, the Trail Special Edition is a unique trim designed for those who plan on heading out into more isolated areas. It doesn't have the same X-REAS sport enhancement suspension as the TRD Sport does, but it does have an extra skid plate covering the transfer case and a Yakima LoadWarrior cargo basket. That cargo basket can be so useful when someone is transporting a lot of gear with them into the mountains or wherever they're headed on an adventure.

On the Trail Special Edition, the wheels are smaller than those on the TRD Sport. This trim rides on 17-inch wheels instead of 20-inch ones, and its wheels are dark gray alloy versions.

The TRD Sport has SofTex seats, but the Trail Special Edition goes back to having fabric ones. Its seats, though, aren't like those found on other trims. They're black with tan accent stitching, going along with the rugged nature of the trim.

In the back of the Trail Special Edition, there's a sliding cargo deck as well as under-floor storage. This is optional on the lower trims. It also comes with a 40-quart accessory cooler with tie-down straps. This is a fun bonus feature that can be packed with all kinds of drinks and snacks. The all-weather floor mats are easy to clean and can live up to a lot of wear and tear, and the Trail Special edition has the LATCH system, too.

With the SR5 Premium, the 4Runner offers the option of getting a third row. Some buyers are going to prefer that configuration. The rear seats can always be folded down when not needed, and this can open up more storage space.

On the SR5 Premium, the seats are covered in SofTex. The front seats are heated, and both front seats are power-adjustable. The driver's seat can move in eight ways, and the front-passenger's seat can move in four.

The sliding cargo deck that's standard with the Trail Special Edition is only available with the SR5 Premium. The SR5 Premium, though, does have an accessory cargo net to help keep things in place.

On the SR5 Premium, the rearview mirror is more advanced. It has an auto-dimming function and a HomeLink universal transceiver. This latter component allows the rearview mirror to act as a garage door opener and possibly interact with other devices in one's home.

Like the Trail Special Edition, the SR5 Premium has 17-inch wheels. Its wheels have a six-spoke design but don't have the dark gray finish like the Trail Special Edition's wheels do.

On the outside of the SR5 Premium, the side mirrors have turn signal indicators. These mirrors are heated, as they are on all of the other trims. Plus, there's the option to get a power moonroof. The unique components that come with the Trail Special Edition, such as the Yakima roof basket, are no longer offered at the SR5 Premium level.

A noticeable upgrade is that the SR5 Premium gets to have integrated navigation. A lot of consumers are specifically looking for this feature, so it will help the SR5 Premium attract some attention.

In addition, the SR5 Premium has blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert as a standard part of its safety package. This is the first level that these two systems are standard. On the Trail Special Edition, they're not even optional, though they are on the TRD Sport.

Compare the 2022 4Runner SR5 Premium vs TRD Off-Road. What is the difference?

Given its name, it'll come as no surprise that the TRD Off-Road comes standard with a 4x4 drivetrain. All of the lower trims provide the option of having two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The TRD Off-Road also gets to have a locking rear differential.

This trim has several other components that make it more durable. Multi-terrain select is a program that lets drivers optimize performance in specific conditions, and crawl control can take charge of the gas and brake pedals while the driver focuses on steering around obstacles. The TRD Off-Road is available with a kinetic dynamic suspension system, which can enhance handling in a variety of situations.

Unfortunately, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and integrated navigation are taken off the list of standard features with the TRD Off-Road.

Inside its cabin, the TRD Off-Road has more basic elements than those on the SR5 Premium. For instance, it only has fabric seats. Its driver's seat is power-adjustable, but its front-passenger seat is not. Both are not heated. The rearview mirror on the TRD Off-Road is just a traditional one, and Toyota removed a power moonroof from being an available component.

However, the TRD Off-Road does have a special TRD shift knob, and it has TRD Off-Road floor mats. Its 17-inch wheels have a seven-spoke design as well as black accents. There's special TRD Off-Road badging, and like the other trims, this one has available running boards.

It's important to note that none of the TRD trims are available with the third row of seats.

Compare the 2022 4Runner TRD Off-Road vs TRD Off-Road Premium. What is the difference?

The TRD Off-Road Premium is kind of like a combination of the SR5 Premium and the TRD Off-Road. It has the same mechanical components as the TRD Off-Road has, and it has several of the same components that the SR5 Premium has.

On its exterior, it can have a power moonroof, and it has heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators. Inside the cabin, it has SofTex seats, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a cargo net. It also has the same type of advanced rearview mirror as the SR5 Premium has.

One of its unique details are the red TRD lettering on the front headrests. Plus, this trim is available with a multi-terrain monitor that can show the driver the front, side, or rear views. It's available with a panoramic view monitor to provide the driver with an all-around perspective. This monitor is available on the TRD Sport and SR5 Premium but not on the TRD Off-Road.

The TRD Off-Road Premium can look out for vehicles that would otherwise be difficult for the driver to see. That's because it has blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, just like the SR5 Premium has. The TRD Off-Road Premium has the same technology package as the SR5 Premium has, too. This means it gets to have navigation.

Compare the 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium vs Limited Trim Levels. What is the difference?

If a customer takes advantage of the Limited's 4x4 drivetrain, then he/she would get a full-time 4WD system and a Torsen limited-slip center differential with a locking feature. This can boost capability when it's hard to grip the pavement or trail surface, and it can be good to have full-time 4WD when towing. On the other hand, the Limited doesn't have multi-terrain select or crawl control like the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium have. It does, though, have a X-REAS sport enhancement suspension.

The Limited looks more sophisticated than the TRD Off-Road Premium does because of its 20-inch wheels and chrome door handles. This is the level at which a power moonroof becomes standard. This is also a trim that has available automatic running boards.

More upgrades can be found inside the cabin of the Limited. It has dual-zone automatic climate control, perforated leather seats, and a panoramic view monitor. Its front seats are heated and ventilated, and the driver's seat has power lumbar and a memory function.

Like the TRD Off-Road Premium, the Limited has built-in navigation. Rather than just having eight eight speakers, it has 15 JBL speakers, including a subwoofer. From a safety perspective, the packages of the Limited and TRD Off-Road Premium are very similar, except the Limited has front and rear parking assist.

Compare the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Limited vs TRD Pro Trims. What is the difference?

With the TRD Pro, a 4x4 drivetrain is standard. It's a part-time 4WD system with a locking rear differential as opposed to the full-time 4WD system that the Limited can come with. Some elements that make the TRD Pro special are its TRD-tuned front springs and the TRD FOX high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs.

There's no confusing the TRD Pro for another trim. It has a TRD Pro-stamped front aluminum skid plate, matte-black TRD alloy wheels that measure 17 inches, a TRD roof rack, and black TRD Pro badging. It doesn't have the same type of advanced outside mirrors as the Limited has, but it does have a power moonroof.

Things in the cabin are a bit less refined in the TRD Pro trim than they are in the Limited. This trim has SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, and TRD red lettering on the front headrests. It has a TRD shift knob and TRD Pro all-weather floor liners.

Fortunately, the TRD Pro has the same type of infotainment system as the Limited does, with 15 JBL speakers and navigation. It doesn't have front and rear parking assist, but it does have a panoramic view monitor and a multi-terrain monitor.

Which Trim to Choose?

If someone wants to go off-roading, one of the TRD Off-Road trims might be best since they have multi-terrain select, crawl control, and multi-terrain monitors. The TRD Off-Road Premium offers several high-end features, so it would be a real treat. It's not as expensive as the top-of-the-line TRD Pro, making it a more practical purchase.

For those on tighter budgets, the SR5 Premium would be a great pick. It has advanced safety mechanisms, heated front seats, and a lot of convenient amenities inside its cabin. In addition, the SR5 Premium has an available third row.
